BLUE CHRISTMAS FOR KENNY BERNSTEIN RACING

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (Dec. 10, 2009)—“Sheryl and I just arrived at the race shop and had our first look at the new Copart blue dragster,” said Copart/Lucas Oil team owner Kenny Bernstein.

“Brandon and general manager Lenny Imbrogno have been very busy shuttling transporters, trucks, trailers and race cars to the paint shop since the team returned from the Auto Club Finals.

“The dragster was the first piece back with the new blue paint scheme and we’re expecting the first transporter back today or tomorrow.

“The team’s excitement is mounting for the 2010 season and for our part, we’re thrilled that we’re going to have a blue Christmas, Copart blue that is!”

‘IT’S A WRAP’ FOR BUDWEISER AND THEY CAP 30 YEARS OF SPONSORSHIP ASSOCIATION
BY PRESENTING A CLYDESDALE TO KENNY BERNSTEIN AT THE AUTO CLUB FINALS

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 15, 2009) – It was an emotional weekend at the Auto Club Finals for the Bernstein family as their 30-year sponsorship relationship with Budweiser came to a close. Throughout the weekend, six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein, along with son Brandon, recounted some of their favorite memories while flying the Budweiser banner.

In pre-race ceremonies, Budweiser capped their 30-year sponsorship relationship  by presenting Kenny Bernstein with a world-famous Budweiser Clydesdale, the highest honor that Budweiser can bestow.

The presentation was made by Corey Christanell, Director of Sports and Entertainment Marketing at Anheuser-Busch, Inc.

“We are very humbled to be chosen as one of the select few to receive one of these marvelous Clydesdales,” said Bernstein.

Other recipients include the late Dale Earnhardt and country music star Tim McGraw.

“I could stand here and name hundreds of names, from August Busch III and IV on down who have helped us over the years and I thank them so very much,” continued Bernstein.  “We also want to thank the wholesalers and all the fans. This is a special moment for us and a little bittersweet at the same time because we’re happy that we do get to go on with Copart next year.  We’re very appreciative of what Budweiser has allowed us to do which is follow a dream I had from the time I was 15 years old to where it is today.

“Reality set in this last week.  As the ‘last call’ was drawing close, we got emails and phone calls from so many of the upper management team at Anheuser-Busch that we had worked with through the years who have gone on to other careers.  They are all here in spirit with us today and will be watching ESPN2 tonight.”

After accepting the gift of the Clydesdale, Bernstein and wife Sheryl took one last ride on the renowned Budweiser hitch, passing the packed grandstands filled with cheering fans.

The Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster made its last entry in the Auto Club Finals history books as the No. 5 qualifier, 3.832/312.28.

In the opening round of eliminations, driver Brandon Bernstein pulled to the starting line to face Chris “The Golden Greek” Karamesines.  It was a close race with Bernstein turning on the win light with a 3.873/314.61 vs. ‘The Greek’s’ 3.955/308.28.

In the second round, it was a classic duel between two friends, Antron Brown and Bernstein.  In career matches they each had six wins.  This round was going to be the tie breaker.  Bernstein was first out of the gate, but Brown was first to the finish line, bringing Budweiser’s three decades of involvement to an end.

“That was an emotional last pass,” said the second generation driver.  “All the years with Budweiser are done now.  We had a great race car.

“We will move forward from this point, taking with us many Budweiser memories that will live with us forever.”

Bernstein finished fifth in 2009 NHRA Full Throttle point standings.

LAST CALL FOR BUDWEISER DRAGSTER AT SEASON FINALE

POMONA, Calif. – After three decades the familiar red Budweiser dragster owned and driven by six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein, and now piloted by son Brandon, will take its final bow at the season ending Automobile Club of Southern California Finals November 12-15.

The Bernstein family would like to end their 30-year Bud involvement with a trip to victory circle.

“This final race is going to be very emotional for our family,” said Budweiser/Lucas Oil team owner Kenny Bernstein.  “We owe a debt of gratitude to all the executives, brand management and sports marketing team members and wholesalers who have touched our lives during our tenure at Anheuser-Busch.  All of these folks made it possible for a young man from Texas to follow his dream.  We have enjoyed success that was way beyond our wildest imagination when we were a teenager reading hot rod magazines in high school. It’s been a great ride.”

While flying the Budweiser banner, the Bernstein duo has combined for a total of 86 national event wins:  68 Top Fuel and Funny Car victories for Kenny, 18 Top Fuel trophies for Brandon.  Kenny won four consecutive Funny Car championships from 1985-1988, and then capped that achievement with two Top Fuel championships, 1996 and 2001. Kenny will forever be remembered as the first to surpass the 300 mile-per-hour barrier in Gainesville, Fla. on March 20, 1992.

They became the first father and son in NHRA history to win at the same national event in Las Vegas in April 2001 when Brandon won the Alcohol Dragster category, sharing victory circle with his father who won Top Fuel honors driving his Budweiser dragster.

Brandon was in the hunt for the 2007 championship which came down to the deciding round between Bernstein and Schumacher in the semifinals at the season finale in Pomona.  Bernstein finished third in NHRA point standings that year for the third time in his career.

Brandon’s last event win was two races ago in Richmond, Va. He has also taken runner-up honors four times this season and has five semifinal showings.

“We started the season strong,” explained Brandon, “and then bogged down a bit during the summer.  We have had a resurgence these last several events and think we have a good chance to take Budweiser to victory circle one last time. It would be the icing on the cake if we could make that happen.

“After this event, we’ll be trading paint.  The team will hot foot it back to our race shop in Brownsburg, Ind. and by the end of that week, we’ll be applying our first coat of Copart blue paint.

“We were fortunate enough to obtain Copart sponsorship for 2010 with the help of NHRA and our friend Vacaville, Calif. restaurateur Joe Murdaca.  We are looking forward to a new chapter with Copart, an online vehicle auction company.  This is their first experience with NHRA drag racing and they are energized!  We are all excited about the coming season.

“We are also thrilled that Lucas Oil will remain with us and we’re looking forward to the debut of the Copart/Lucas Oil dragster.  Mac Tools will also be celebrating their 23rd year with us, and La Paz will commemorate their 32nd season.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the Automobile Club of Southern California Nationals begins Thursday, Nov. 12 at 2:30 p.m.  There is a second qualifying run scheduled Friday at 2:30, with two rounds Saturday, noon and 3:30 p.m., to end qualifying and set the elimination field for Sunday.  The first pair of Top Fuel cars will fire their engines at 11 a.m.

BERNSTEIN DRIVES TO SEMIFINALS AT LAS VEGAS NATIONALS DESPITE FIGHTING FLU

LAS VEGAS (Nov. 1, 2009) – Brandon Bernstein battled through a weekend of wrestling with the flu to score his fifth final four showing of the season at the Las Vegas Nationals.

“We were fortunate to have Dr. Carision, a Las Vegas physician, on duty at the NHRA event over the weekend,” explained an ailing Bernstein.  “She was awesome, checking in with us and giving us some intravenous fluids.

“When I woke up Sunday morning, I told myself, ‘We’ve got to go out and win this race.’  The only good part about Sunday was the time we were in the race car because when the engine fired, the adrenaline started pumping. Between rounds we were doing everything we could to stay hydrated and strong enough to fight this virus.”

Brandon was the No. 6 qualifier at “The Strip” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a 3.853/317.27.

In the opening round of eliminations, Bernstein squared off against Bob Vandergriff, Jr. who lost traction right off the starting line.  The Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster made a trouble-free run (3.890/310.98 vs. 6.710/102.81) to transfer to the quarterfinals to face Antron Brown.

“Rob (Flynn, crew chief) did a good job on the tune-up on that first run,” said Bernstein.  “It’s tough on the crew chiefs because it’s hotter than we’ve seen it all weekend so they have to tip toe around their combinations to find out how much the track can hold.”

It was Bernstein who scored the second round win in a close contest with Brown. Bernstein was first out of the gate with a .053-second reaction time and first to the finish line with a 3.882/311.85 vs. Brown’s 3.894/311.34.

“We just want to go rounds,” said the ailing Bernstein. “And that was a big win for us.  Antron is fourth in points just ahead of us, and we’re trying to work our way up the ladder.”

In the semifinals, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team turned in another consistent performance, 3.898/311.41, but were edged out of the round victory by Spencer Massey’s 3.849/315.34 effort.

“Our team gets a tip of the hat for giving Spencer a run for his money and for doing a good job negotiating a tricky lane,” said Bernstein.  “We were just on the wrong side of a good race. But you can definitely see the results of our Budweiser/Lucas Oil team’s long hours of hard work.”

Bernstein remains fifth in NHRA point standings, and is just 22 points, approximately one round, out of fourth place.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM HOPING FOR
BACK-TO-BACK VICTORIES IN VEGAS

LAS VEGAS –  There is a motivational motto that has been lurking in the forefront of Brandon Bernstein’s thoughts for the past six months and it has a special meaning as the Kenny Bernstein team prepares for the Las Vegas Nationals Oct. 30- Nov. 1.

In April, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team toured the Las Vegas Nellis Air Force Base and when they saw the USAF mission statement, “Fly, fight and win,” they decided to adapt it to

“Drive, fight and win!”

“I think our team embodies that mission statement,” said Bernstein.  “We got a win at the last race in Richmond after hard-fought months of trying.  Our team never gave up.  We kept morale up, we continued to get better and better, and we finally had our break-through victory.

“We were runner-up in Vegas in April and we’d sure like another trip to the finals this time around.  We’ve had a great car these past few races, but we weren’t able to capitalize on our performance until the last race in Richmond.  I think that victory gives us momentum and incentive to finish the year out with a flourish.

“With only Vegas and Pomona left on our calendar this year, it’s a dogfight.  Nearly every one of the drivers in the top 10 in the Countdown has won a race this year.  So obviously that means everyone is capable and it’s a nail biter for each of the crew members and all the drivers.  Everyone is under the microscope and has to do their job.

“It also means every bonus point in each qualifying round is critical and there’s a 20-point bonus, equivalent to a round, if you set a national record.  We’re coming into some cool weather and quick tracks, so anything’s possible.  The fans are in for a treat on Halloween weekend in Vegas!

“We are also anxious to take our friends at New York-New York Hotel and Casino to victory.  They were with us for our win in 2007.  If we can take them to victory again this time, our team will be big-time celebrating Sunday night at New York-New York.”

Bernstein is currently fifth in NHRA Full Throttle point standings.  Besides the recent victory in Richmond, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team has four runner-up finishes on their scorecard this year.

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying begins Friday, Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m. followed by a second session at 4 p.m.  There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, 12:30 and 3:30 p.m., with eliminations scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Notable:  This year marks the 30th anniversary of Budweiser and the Bernstein team.  It is an unprecedented watermark and the longest sponsor/team association in all of autosports.  Budweiser has announced that it will leave the team at the end of the season.  Copart, Inc., an online vehicle auction company, will be the primary sponsor of the Kenny Bernstein Racing dragster in 2010.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to all the Budweiser executives, brand and sports management personnel that have touched our lives through these past three decades,” said Bernstein. “Budweiser helped a Texas boy’s racing dreams come true.

“At the same time, we welcome Copart president Jay Adair, CEO and founder Willis Johnson, and the Copart family.  They bring a lot of energy to our team and we are looking forward to a new look and a great 2010 season.

“Being able to announce a sponsor for next season in this tough economic climate shows the value of our sport.  We owe a debt of gratitude to NHRA for helping to get Copart interested in our sport, and to our friend and Vacaville, Calif. restaurateur Joe Murdaca who networked with us to get Copart president Jay Adair to the race in Sonoma and used his knowledge of our team and our sport to help solidify the deal.”

“We urge all our fans to log onto www.copart.com and check out the motorized inventory - cars, trucks, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, you name it – offered for sale.  The fans will love the virtual bidding, VB2.”

Budweiser Lager Lesson:  Budweiser is one of the most difficult beers to brew because it is fermented at cooler temperatures, thus taking more time to brew, yet resulting in a clean, crisp taste that you don’t get from other beers.

BRANDON BERNSTEIN TAKES SUNDAY DRIVE TO VICTORY CIRCLE IN RICHMOND;
BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM LEAPFROGS TO FIFTH IN NHRA FULL THROTTLE POINT STANDINGS

RICHMOND, Va. (Oct. 11, 2009) – Brandon Bernstein declared his 18th career victory at Virginia Motorsports Park a total Budweiser/Lucas Oil team effort and the result of everyone staying positive during the tough times.

“It has been a long time since our last victory,” said Bernstein, “and our team was hungry for a win.  We pulled together today, we were motivated, and Rob (Flynn, crew chief) made great tuning calls.  Driving the car was effortless.  I knew that every round the car was just going to go down the track and it would be straight and competitive.  It gave us a lot of confidence.”

Bernstein qualified sixth at Virginia Motorsports Park with a 3.832/313.15.

In the opening round of eliminations, Bernstein took the round victory over Scott Weis.    Bernstein clocked a 3.842-second elapsed time (at 313.58 mph), nearly as strong as his qualifying effort, as Weis broke after the burnout.

“We were third pair down the track,” explained Bernstein.  “We watched as two of the cars qualified in the top half of the field smoked the tires in the lane most crew chiefs had picked as the preferable lane. At the last minute, Rob (Flynn, crew chief) swapped lanes and our Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster went right down Broadway.

“It’s always a relief to get a round under your belt.”

In the second round, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team got another bye run when Scott Palmer was unable to return after suffering serious engine damage in round one.  Again, the Kenny Bernstein team ran a very competitive 3.871/308.85.

“It’s too bad Scott wasn’t able to return,” said Bernstein.  “We know his team would have liked to make a good race out of the round.  We were able to relax a little on this run, but we’ve got our work cut out for us against my friend Cory McClenathan in the semis.  He’s got a really tough team.”

Bernstein’s transfer to the semis moved him to sixth in point standings.

In the semis, Bernstein was spectacular out of the starting gate with a .023-second reaction time.  Both drivers were making a lot of horsepower down the track until Brandon took the lead, streaking across the finish line with a 3.851/313.66, while McClenathan’s engine erupted into a ball of fire at the stripe.  McClenathan was close behind with a 3.902/290.82.

“This was a huge round win for us,” said Bernstein.  “We’re going to the finals and I think we’ve got some good mojo going.”

Bernstein pulled to the starting line in the money round to face Antron Brown.  When the Christmas tree turned green, Bernstein was on his way to victory, straight and smooth, while Brown struggled with loss of traction at the hit of the throttle.  Bernstein got the win light with a 3.844/307.09 to Brown’s 9.009/75.99.

“This gives us a lot of motivation going forward,” said Bernstein.  “But I just can’t say enough about the whole team and the positive attitude everyone has kept, especially my dad. We just kept at the grind and we knew eventually we were going to knock down that door and get the win.

“When we won the round against Cory, who has been running fantastic, we knew we had a very good chance to win against Antron.  It’s been a long time since our last victory and we’ve got two weeks to savor our victory before Las Vegas.”

Bernstein scored eight runner-up finishes between victories.  Ironically in the beginning of his career he claimed eight wins in his first nine final round appearances.

“In the first few years of our career it seemed like if we made it to the final round we were a shoe-in for the victory.  Lately, we just haven’t been able to get the win light. Finally, today we put all the pieces together in our fifth final round appearance this year.

Bernstein is now tied with the legendary Shirley Muldowney with 18 career Top Fuel victories.

Notably, Bernstein moved from seventh to fifth in NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel point standings.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM AIMING FOR THE TOP AT RICHMOND

RICHMOND, Va. --  Top Fuel pilot Brandon Bernstein and the Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team are looking to end the grueling four-in-a-row Countdown to 1 swing on a high note when they compete at the Virginia Nationals Oct. 9-11.

The NHRA Full Throttle circuit is entering the final three events to determine the season’s champions.

“Besides challenging for the championship, we have other motives,” said second-generation driver Bernstein.  “We are also entering the final three events with our Budweiser red dragster.  We would like to drive to victory circle to help celebrate our family’s 30th anniversary with Bud.

“Additionally this will be the last year the NHRA circuit makes a stop in Richmond, so we’d like to add Virginia Motorsports to the list of tracks where we’ve scored a victory.

“We have a very competitive team and we’ve accumulated some valuable points under the new qualifying scenario.  We need to go rounds on Sunday.”

Bernstein and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team have four runner-up finishes so far this season.

“In 2010 we’ll be flying the blue colors and logo of Copart and we’ll unveil a totally new look with the Copart/Lucas Oil dragster,” said Brandon.

“Being able to announce a sponsor for next season in this tough economic climate shows the value of our sport,” said team owner and six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein. “We owe a debt of gratitude to NHRA for helping to get Copart interested in our sport, and to our friend and Vacaville, Calif. restaurateur Joe Murdaca who networked with us to get Copart president Jay Adair to the race in Sonoma and used his knowledge of our team and our sport to help solidify the deal.”

“We are very excited that the Lucas family will join us in our new venture, marking their ninth year of association with our family’s race team.”

FIRST ROUND LOSS ON HEELS OF GOOD QUALIFYING RUNS
DAMPENS THE DAY FOR BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Oct. 5, 2009) – After a good Saturday qualifying showing at the O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team was included in some bizarre early round upset losses of Countdown to 1 competitors.

“The weather in Memphis for Friday and Saturday’s qualifying runs was gorgeous,” said driver Brandon Bernstein.  “We qualified No. 7 (3.878/312.50) but more importantly we were second and third quick of the Saturday sessions.  Rain moved in on Sunday and nobody turned a wheel.  We were back Monday morning with a little race delay from some mist in the area.

“We were second pair down the track after a day of rain so it didn’t give Rob (Flynn, crew chief) much time to get a read on the race track and make a judgment call on the tune-up,” explained Bernstein.  “We tried to be competitive, yet safe, and we just didn’t give it quite enough power.

“This is a tough loss for everyone on the team because we were so pumped up after doing well Saturday and even earning bonus points in both qualifying rounds. This sport can take you from highs to lows in less than four seconds.

“All the teams will hustle over to Richmond, Va. for next weekend’s race No. 4 in the six-race Countdown. We’re hoping for some redemption there.”

Bernstein is seventh in NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel point standings.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM FOCUSES ON CONSISTENCY
FOR O’REILLY MIDSOUTH NATIONALS

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Brandon Bernstein, driver of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster, has finished in the final four the past three years at the O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals.  The Kenny Bernstein-owned team is hoping for a final round showing this year when they compete Oct. 2-4 at Memphis Motorsports Park.

“We have qualified well at Memphis these past three years,” explained Brandon.  “We were No. 3 qualifier in 2006, No. 2 in ’07, and No. 1 last year.  We need to continue to qualify well because now that we’re in the playoffs we get additional qualifying round points for the top three elapsed times in each session.  Those points add up.

“But we also need to get to the trophy round on race day. We are mid-way, or race three of the six-race playoffs, so the pressure is on to bring your A game to the line every time.  You pretty much have to swing for the fences each time, but you have to be very calculated in doing so.

“We’re under pressure so that every single time you pull to the starting line, points are on the line.”

Bernstein and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team have four runner-up finishes so far this season.

“As we head into the final races of the season we are winding down our association with Budweiser,” said Brandon.  “It will be the end of an era for Budweiser and the Bernstein family.  After three decades and the longest team-sponsor association in all of autosports, the familiar red Bud dragster will be retired as Bud is not returning next year.  In 2010 we’ll be flying the blue colors and logo of Copart and we’ll unveil a totally new look with the Copart/Lucas Oil dragster.”

BRANDON BERNSTEIN ADVANCES TO SECOND ROUND IN DALLAS

ENNIS, Texas (Sept. 27, 2009) –  Though the calendar says it is technically fall, the unseasonably hot conditions in Dallas left crew chiefs scrambling for their best summer tune-ups.

The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team made some good warm weather runs during qualifying at the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries Fall Nationals.

Though Brandon Bernstein qualified eighth at the Texas Motorplex with a 3.889/313.44, his qualifying position belies the performance gains the team made over the weekend.

“We picked up four qualifying points,” explained Bernstein.  “We missed a good opportunity to move up on the qualifying ladder because we missed the Friday night, cool weather tune-up.

But we were good in the hot weather combinations, even picking up the maximum three points for quickest elapsed time in the Saturday afternoon qualifying session.

“Rob (Flynn, crew chief) and the team made some significant strides this weekend.”

Bernstein won the opening round of eliminations against opponent Steve Torrence with a 3.948/275.56 vs. 5.376/44.62.

"That was a relief,” said Bernstein.  “We are so happy to have a round under our belt.  Right before the finish, the blower belt came off and the car just slowed dramatically.  I was concerned that Steve might drive around us, but we got the win light.”

In the quarterfinals, Bernstein pulled to the starting line to face Larry Dixon.  Bernstein was first out of the gate and narrowly missed taking the round win.  Dixon crossed the finish line with a 3.938/308.85 with Bernstein close behind, 3.954/309.70.

“Lane choice was very important at this track,” said Bernstein.  “The right lane is difficult to traverse without losing traction because of some blemishes in the concrete.  My hat’s off to Rob and the team.  We had a good run and they did an awesome job getting down the track that very few crew chiefs were able to negotiate.  Unfortunately, we were on the short end of the stick.

“This was the last pass for our red Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster in Texas and we were hoping for a final round showing.

“We are focused and optimistic as we head to Memphis next weekend where the battle continues.  Just four races before the championship is determined.”

Bernstein remains sixth in NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel point standings.

BRANDON BERNSTEIN PARTICIPATES IN HISTORIC
FOUR-WIDE RACE IN CHARLOTTE

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 20) –Brandon Bernstein and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team participated in a historic four-lane exhibition race at Bruton Smiith’s “Bellagio of dragstrips” zMAX Dragway, the only race track in the country that has four lanes.

In an awesome display of 32,000 horsepower, Bernstein, Spencer Massey, Antron Brown and Morgan Lucas thrilled the crowd with a synchronized display of raw power prior to the final round of Carolina Nationals competition.

“There was more noise out on that dragstrip than you can imagine,” said an enthusiastic Bernstein.  “The hardest part was to get everyone sequenced and pre-staged.  The roar of the crowd was deafening when we all rolled to a stop at the top end.  The exhibition was a real crowd pleaser.

“We want to thank NHRA and Bruton Smith for letting us be a part of history.  It was an awesome adrenaline rush!”

In Carolina Nationals competition, the first of six races in the Countdown to 1, Bernstein earned the No. 4 qualifying berth (3.852/315.86). The team was also awarded additional bonus points for their quick, consistent qualifying runs.

In a first round upset, Bernstein was powerless inside the cockpit as the red dragster lost traction as he tried to launch from the starting line.  Opponent Doug Foley had a trouble-free run, taking the round win.

“That really caught us by surprise,” said Bernstein.  “We smoked the tires at the hit of the throttle.  Rob (Flynn, crew chief) calmed down the tune-up prior to first round and we thought we would march right down the track safely and competitively.

“Something went wrong obviously.  Rob is still going through the data and examining parts to determine exactly what caused the loss of traction.”

Bernstein is currently seeded sixth in NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel points as the circuit heads to Dallas next weekend for the second of a four-in-a-row series.

Budweiser Lager Lesson:  Budweiser is one of the most difficult beers to brew because it is fermented at cooler temperatures, thus taking more time to brew, yet resulting in a clean, crisp taste that you don’t get from other beers.

BRANDON BERNSTEIN LOOKING FOR SECOND VICTORY
AT HOMETOWN TRACK

DALLAS – Second-generation driver Brandon Bernstein looks forward to the NHRA’s annual return to the Texas Motorplex where he can spend the weekend catching up with family and friends between sub-four-second dashes in the 8,000-horsepower Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster owned by his father, six-time champion Kenny.

Bernstein, who qualified fourth for the Countdown to 1 will be competing Sept. 25-27 at the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries Nationals in a four-in-a-row whistle stop tour in the South.

“The Dallas event is the second of six events in the Countdown to 1,” explained Brandon, “and there’s a lot on the line.  Besides trying to win the event, there’s more pressure to qualify in the top three in each of the four qualifying sessions because the top three qualifiers are awarded extra bonus points.

“So it’s essential that you bring your A game to the starting line every qualifying session and every round on race day.  In qualifying, if you are the No. 1 guy, you earn an additional 12 points which might be the difference in a place in the point standings.

“With all the pressure you need to stay cool but focused.”

Bernstein has four runner-up finishes this season and says the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team is hungry for a win.  Brandon won in Dallas in 2006, adding to the trophies his father earned here in 1986 and 2003.

Next year we’ll be flying the blue colors and logo of Copart and we’ll unveil a totally new look with the Copart/Lucas Oil dragster.”

“Being able to announce a sponsor for 2010 in this tough economic climate shows the value of our sport,” said team owner and six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein.

Brandon Bernstein, who was born in Dallas, definitely inherited the Bernstein competitive gene and his father’s winning spirit becoming a soccer star at Jesuit College Preparatory School where his team was undefeated during his four years of high school.

Following high school, Bernstein told his father he wanted to join his legendary Budweiser Top Fuel team.  His father maintained that above all else, Brandon must first attend college and get a degree.

Brandon chose Texas A & M and graduated in 1986 with a degree in kinesiology/sports management.

Armed with the required sheepskin, Brandon got the nod from his father to join the team, but he was give only menial tasks in the beginning.

“I did a lot of cleaning,” said Brandon.  “I pretty much didn’t touch the race car when I came onboard.  Dad felt it was important that I earn my way from the bottom up.  There was no silver spoon.”

The younger Bernstein finally got the nod from his father to assume the driving duties at the beginning of the 2003 season.  Holding the distinction of having the most successful career launch of any other Top Fuel or Funny Car driver in NHRA history, Brandon won five of his first 13 starts.  His first victory came in his second-ever start in Phoenix, ironically the same track where his father earned his first Top Fuel victory.

To date, Brandon has scored 17 career victories.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM READY TO WIN IN CHARLOTTE

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Last year the biggest buzz in NHRA drag racing was arguably the new state-of-the-art zMAX Dragway@ Concord.  This year the Bruton Smith-owned facility has raised the bar and will present a four-wide racing exhibition prior to the final round of eliminations at the Carolina Nationals, and in 2010 it will host two NHRA national events.

The Kenny Bernstein Racing team has a big adrenaline rush as they head into the first race of the playoffs Sept. 18-20 at the race track nicknamed  “the Bellagio of drag strips.”

There are two reasons for high morale: first is that the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team qualified No. 3 and made a final four appearance in the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, regaining their fourth place standing in Full Throttle Top Fuel points.  Secondly, team owner Kenny Bernstein announced that Copart ,Inc., an online vehicle auction company will sponsor the team in 2010.  The contract was signed during live Mac Tools U.S. Nationals coverage on ESPN2 by Bernstein and Copart president Jay Adair, as driver Brandon looked on.

“Our team is pumped,” said Brandon.  “Everybody knows that the team is going forward next year so that’s a load off everyone’s mind.  Also Rob Flynn, our crew chief, along with all the members of our team, have put in a lot of hours chasing a clutch gremlin we’ve been fighting recently.  We think we’ve turned the corner there and are enthusiastic about a strong performance in Charlotte and a run at the championship.

“The track at Charlotte is excellent and the fans will be treated to some great side-by-side racing.  The four-wide exhibition is going to be awesome.  There is bone-jarring, ear-shattering reverberation from two nitro cars!  I can’t wait to see what it’s like with four.  This display will be a real crowd pleaser!

“As we head into the final six races of the season we are winding down our association with Budweiser.  It will be the end of an era for Budweiser and the Bernstein family.  After three decades and the longest team-sponsor association in all of autosports, the familiar red Bud dragster will be retired as Bud is not returning next year.  Next year we’ll be flying the blue colors and logo of Copart and we’ll unveil a totally new look with the Copart/Lucas Oil dragster.”

“We are very excited that the Lucas family will join us in our new venture, marking their ninth year of association with our family’s race team.”

Full Throttle points were reset for the top 10 contenders in each of the professional categories that will participate in Countdown to 1 competition.  The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team will head into qualifying 50 points out of the lead.

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the Carolina Nationals begins Friday at 3:30 p.m. followed by a second session at 7 p.m.  There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, noon and 3:30 p.m., with final eliminations beginning Sunday at noon.

KENNY BERNSTEIN ANNOUNCES NEW SPONSOR FOR 2010;
SON BRANDON DRIVES TO FINAL FOUR AT NHRA’S PREMIERE EVENT

One Giant Happy CopartLucas Oil Top Fuel Family - Kenny Bernstein - Brandon Bernstein -
Willis Johnson CEO Copart - Jay Adair President Copart - Forrest and Charlotte Lucas

CLERMONT, Ind. (Sept. 7) – The Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil was an historical event for Kenny Bernstein Racing.  On Sunday (Sept. 6) of NHRA’s crown jewel of races, Kenny Bernstein announced that after three decades of Budweiser sponsorship and campaigning a red dragster, beginning next year he would field a blue dragster with primary sponsorship by Copart, Inc., an online company that sells more than 1 million cars per year.

Bernstein, son and driver Brandon, along with Copart president Jay Adair made the announcement live on ESPN2 and then followed with local and national media one-on-one interviews.

The new sponsorship message was delivered on Bernstein’s birthday, and he acknowledged that he couldn’t have a better present than the addition of a primary sponsor for his race team.

“We are happy to announce the birth of the Copart/Lucas Oil dragster,” said Bernstein.  “We are pleased that Lucas Oil will remain with the team, marking their ninth season.”

In Mac Tools U.S. Nationals track action, Brandon was the No. 3 qualifier at O’Reilly Raceway Park with a 3.846/316.30.

In the opening round of race day competition, Bernstein rolled to the starting line to face Bruce Litton.  Litton left before the green light was illuminated on the Christmas tree and was disqualified with a red light start.  Bernstein clocked 3.915/307.02 to take the round win along with lane choice over second round opponent Cory McClenathan.

In the quarterfinals the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster crossed the finish line first with a 3.887/313.73 to McClenathan’s 3.899/303.71.  Bernstein reclaimed fourth place in Full Throttle point standings by virtue of this round win.

“This was a must win round for us, “said Bernstein.  “We had been in the top four in points all season long, then Cory got by us in Reading and we dropped to fifth.  We were only nine points behind Cory going into the race today and we were focused on regaining fourth place.  We were able to accomplish that goal.”

Bernstein did his job on the starting line in the semifinals against Tony Schumacher, nailing the Christmas tree with a .026-second reaction time vs. Schumacher’s .096.  Bernstein was in the lead until half track when the car lost traction and that brief stumble allowed Schumacher to win the round, 3.877/312.06 to 4.107/254.66.

“We had a nice lead in the bank by virtue of our reaction time,” said Bernstein. “Our incremental performance numbers matched his so we had a lead of about seven-hundredths.  “We were looking good until half track and then the car lost traction.  I caught it and pedaled it and it recovered, but by then we couldn’t do anything but watch Schumacher drive past us.

“It was a shame.  The team has worked really hard lately to find the gremlin in the clutch area that has plagued us recently.  We believe we have found the culprit, but we’ll have to wait another year to chase a victory here in Indy.

“We’re looking forward to the first round of the playoffs that begins next week in Charlotte.”

Points for the top 10 teams qualified for the Countdown to 1 will be reset.  Brandon will be fourth, 50 points out of the lead when qualifying begins Sept. 18 for the Carolina Nationals.

KENNY BERNSTEIN ANNOUNCES COPART AS NEW PRIMARY TOP FUEL SPONSOR

One Giant Happy CopartLucas Oil Top Fuel Family - Kenny Bernstein - Brandon Bernstein -
Willis Johnson CEO Copart - Jay Adair President Copart - Forrest and Charlotte Lucas

CLERMONT, IND. (Sept. 6, 2009) – Six-time NHRA champion and Hall of Famer Kenny Bernstein has named Copart, Inc., an online vehicle remarketing company that sells more than 1 million cars per year, as the primary sponsor of his legendary Top Fuel team beginning in 2010.

Copart sells vehicles using an online auction format at www.copart.com, making it easy for people to search for and bid on vehicles from the comfort of their home or office.

“We are thrilled to be announcing this new relationship with Copart,” said Bernstein. “We visited Copart headquarters in July and were amazed by the technology that allows buyers from all over the world to bid on an extensive inventory of more than 50,000 vehicles each day.”

Buyers can choose from classic, early, and late model cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, boats, snowmobiles, jet skis and recreational vehicles – all in a variety of conditions. The vehicles are located at more than 130 facilities nationwide, making it easy to find a great deal nearby.

“This new relationship with Kenny Bernstein is a perfect fit for Copart, as there is a high percentage of do-it-yourselfers and car enthusiasts that follow NHRA who can benefit from our selection of great vehicles,” said Copart President Adair. “Kenny Bernstein is a known winner, and Copart buyers also win when they are the highest bidder on a car and get a great deal. We all know that winning is awesome, and we look forward to a winning season with Kenny Bernstein!”

Bernstein added that he is also excited to announce the birth of the Copart dragster for the 2010 season, which will feature a new blue paint scheme that mirrors Copart’s colors.

Bernstein is well-known throughout the motorsports community. He holds the unique distinction of being the only race team owner to have collected wins in each of America’s three major motorsports series: NHRA drag racing, NASCAR, and IndyCar racing. There’s hardly a major NHRA award he hasn’t won, and most he’s won in multiples.

In 2009, Budweiser and Bernstein celebrate their 30th anniversary, the longest sponsor/team association in all of motorsports. In 30 years together, Budweiser and Kenny Bernstein Racing captured six NHRA titles, including four consecutive Funny Car crowns (1985-1988) and two Top Fuel titles (1996, 2001). Kenny and son Brandon, who assumed the driving duties in 2003, amassed 85 national event victories under the Budweiser flag and in 1992, Kenny became the first driver to surpass the 300 mile-per-hour barrier.

Kenny has made his mark, but his expertise goes far beyond wins and losses. He is first and foremost a businessman. Bernstein, who is famous for building the Budweiser brand identity in the motorsports community for the past three decades will now promote Copart’s brand with the same zeal.

The 2010 season will mark Brandon’s eighth as pilot of the Kenny Bernstein Racing dragster. He has 17 career victories to his credit and had the most successful career launch of any other Top Fuel or Funny Car driver. Brandon won five of his first 13 starts, including his second-ever start in the race at Phoenix, and was voted the 2003 Southern California Auto Club “Rookie of the Year.”

The Bernsteins are fan favorites and have spent years working in markets across the United States, helping to build awareness and sales for brands they represent.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to the fans who have supported us through the years and to the media who have brought our story into the homes of millions these past three decades,” said Bernstein in concluding remarks. “We are happy that we will continue to race and field the Copart team in NHRA drag racing. We think we have been one of the marquee teams in this sport for the past three decades and we bring with us 30 years of fan base. NHRA drag racing is our home.”

KENNY BERNSTEIN TEAM BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL IN PREPARATION
FOR THE MAC TOOLS U.S. NATIONALS PRESENTED BY LUCAS OIL

CLERMONT, Ind. – Brandon Bernstein and the Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team have secured a starting berth in the playoffs; however with the last race of the regular season, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil, looming on the horizon the team is busy combing through performance records and parts and pieces to bring their A game to the starting line of NHRA’s most prestigious event.

“We have some work to do at this race,” confided Brandon.  “This is our last shot to make up a spot and better our starting position.  We’re fifth going into this race, less than one round out of fourth place in point standings, and we’ve got the alligators nipping at our heels.  Points are reset beginning with Charlotte, the first event of the six-race Countdown to 1.

Each spot from second place on down is separated by 10 points.  Obviously every point counts.

“Rob (Flynn, crew chief) and the team will be burning the midnight oil to try to come up with a performance advantage.  It’s going to be very stressful for all the team members and the driver can’t stumble either.  I have to be on my game every single run.

“And of course, every driver wants a “W” (win) next to their name for the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.  We were runner-up here in 2006.  It’s time for a victory!”

With Budweiser recently announcing that they will not return in 2010 after 30 years of primary sponsorship with the Kenny Bernstein team, new sponsorship is being actively pursued.

“We are passionate about the sport of NHRA drag racing and we will continue to field a team in 2010 with Brandon as the driver if we can secure sponsorship,” said six-time champion Kenny Bernstein. “But let me stress that if we don’t find funding for next year, we will not be back.  Racing is our business.  We do not have another business to fall back on to help absorb the expense of a race team.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to all the Budweiser employees and wholesalers we’ve worked with through the years, as well as the fans and friends who have followed and supported us beginning with the Funny Car era.

“We believe that taking a proactive role in initiating programs and promotions that help sell product and build brand awareness has been an integral part of retaining our sponsorship associations through the years.  Coupled with the success we’ve had on the racetrack while flying the Budweiser colors, including six NHRA championships and 85 national event victories between Brandon and me, then it’s a very attractive opportunity for another sponsor.

“We think we have been one of the marquee teams in this sport for the past three decades and we bring with us 30 years of fan base. NHRA drag racing is our home.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil begins Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.  There are two qualifying sessions Saturday, 1:45 p.m. and 7 p.m.; two qualifying sessions Sunday 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., with eliminations scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM GEARED UP TO ROCK READING

Reading, Pa. – The Kenny Bernstein owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team had encouraging results during a recent test session and they are optimistic about a strong performance at the Toyo Tires Nationals Aug. 21-23.

“We were working on strengthening our performance early in the run,” said Brandon Bernstein.  “We feel we made some headway in that area. We had those Mac Tools smokin’ during the test session while we were making adjustments.

“The Maple Grove track is traditionally a very quick track,” continued the second-generation driver.  “All the trees that surround the track produce a lot of oxygen and these powerful 8,000-horsepower engines love oxygen.

“We are gearing up for a tremendous dogfight in the Top Fuel ranks from here on out,” said Bernstein.  “You’re going to have to bring your A game to the starting line and you’re going to have to have a good enough tune-up to be able to swing for the fences.  There’s some steep competition.

“We have already clinched a starting berth in the Countdown to 1, so our goal now is to stay in the Top Five before the Countdown starts.  That gives us the race here at Reading and the big daddy, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, before the field is set and the points are reset for the six-race playoffs that will determine the championship.

“Our team is very talented and they have drive.  It would be nice to bring home a championship for Dad and it would be a great way to cap our 30th and final year with Budweiser.”

With Budweiser recently announcing that they will not return in 2010 after 30 years of primary sponsorship with the Kenny Bernstein team, new sponsorship is being actively pursued.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM MAKES PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT ON RACE DAY; DEBUTS NEW CHASSIS AT LUCAS OIL NATIONALS

BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 16) – The fight to earn a starting position in the Countdown to 1 continued at the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.  Though the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team remains fourth in Full Throttle point standings and has already secured a berth in the Countdown, they rolled out a brand new Murf McKinney chassis for this event to allow them three races to fine-tune the intricacies of their mechanical combination before the beginning of the six-race series that will ultimately crown the 2009 NHRA Full Throttle champions.

Driver Brandon Bernstein qualified eighth at Brainerd with a 3.965/304.05.

Rain forced cancellation of the fourth qualifying session and eliminations were delayed by rain on Sunday before competition in the 16th of 24 races got underway.

Team owner and newly-inducted member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America Kenny Bernstein watched his son take a big-time first round win over Clay Millican, 3.886/313.80 vs. 3.974/293.09.

“It’s been a tense morning,” confided Brandon. “We were delayed by rain, then we suited up and we were at the starting line, then it rained again, we went back to the pits, and then back to the starting line again. We were first pair so that’s nerve-wracking because it had been raining hard and you have no idea how much the track can hold.  There was still a lot of moisture in the air which affects the tune-up.

“Rob (Flynn, crew chief) and the team did a great job, and we clocked our lowest elapsed time of the weekend along with a stellar speed. We got a good lap under our belt.”

In the quarterfinals, Bernstein rolled to the line to face his Lucas Oil stable mate and friend Morgan Lucas. It was a valiant effort by the men in red and despite solid performance numbers; Lucas tripped the win light with a 3.833/308.99 vs. Bernstein’s 3.900/311.34.

“The Bernsteins and the Lucases are just like family so it was going to be tough to watch someone lose,” said Brandon. “Charlotte and Forrest (Lucas) were just with us in Detroit for Dad’s Hall of Fame induction.

“Our team made some mechanical adjustments and both runs on Sunday trumped our qualifying times so we were headed in the right direction.

“This was a Lucas race and we would have much rather have met Morgan in the finals.  In the end Morgan won the race and it was the first time he was able to share the victory with his parents. Our family congratulates them.”

The NHRA circuit heads to Reading, Pa. for the Toyo Tires Nationals Aug. 21 – Aug. 23.

NHRA legend Bernstein inducted into Motorsports Hall of Fame of America class of 2009

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

NHRA legend Kenny Bernstein was one of seven icons from the world of motorsports inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America this evening during the organization’s annual induction ceremony at the Fillmore Theatre in Detroit.

Bernstein, a six-time NHRA world champion who earned the title “King of Speed” in 1992 when he became the first NHRA driver to break the elusive 300-mph barrier, was inducted alongside sports-car specialist turned successful television personality David Hobbs, flat track motorcycle dominator Scott Parker, two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr., NASCAR pioneer Joe Weatherly, and innovative racing promoters Les Richter and H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler.

“There are a multitude of people that I could thank for touching our lives through the years,” Bernstein said during his acceptance speech. “First of all, I would like to recognize my wife, Sheryl, who has danced every dance and has helped me build the structure for our racing and sports-marketing business. I would also like to thank Tom Compton and all of those at NHRA who have helped grow the sport of drag racing. Founder Wally Parks had a vision that provided many generations of racers like me a safe place to race.”

Kenny Bernstein's Hall of Fame NHRA career includes six world championships -- four in Funny Car and two in Top Fuel -- and numerous national records.

One of the greatest moments of Bernstein's career was in March 1992 at the NHRA Gatornationals when he became the first Top Fuel driver to top 300 mph.

Bernstein was the first NHRA driver to win world championships in both premier nitro categories, taking consecutive Funny Car crowns from 1985-’88 and earning Top Fuel titles in 1996 and 2001. He won 69 races during his career, 39 in Top Fuel and 30 in Funny Car. He powered to his landmark milestone speed of 301.70 mph at the 1992 NHRA Gatornationals at Florida’s Gainesville Raceway. In 2001, he was named No. 6 on the list of the top 50 drivers in NHRA history, as part of the NHRA’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Since his official retirement in 2002, Bernstein has competed in parts of two seasons. In 2003, he found himself back in the driver’s seat near midseason after son Brandon suffered season-ending injuries in a crash in Englishtown. The elder Bernstein won four of the last five races during the 15-race substitute-driver stretch. In 2007, Bernstein returned to the cockpit of a Funny Car and drove a Dodge Charger to two runner-up finishes. After the 2007 campaign, he went back into retirement and continues to be an active team owner for the Top Fuel dragster that Brandon drives.

“I also want to thank all of the employees of our race teams these past 30 years who have contributed to our success, as well as the media who have brought exposure into the households of millions,” Bernstein said. “And to the great fans who have followed us over the years – thank you. Finally, a special thanks to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America for the honor bestowed upon us tonight.”

Bernstein has long been regarded as one of motorsports’ most savvy businessmen, and this year he celebrated the 30-year anniversary with longtime sponsor Anheuser-Busch, the longest team sponsorship relationship in the history of auto racing. He continues to hold the unique distinction of being the first and only race team owner to have collected wins in each of America’s major motorsports series: NHRA Drag Racing, NASCAR Cup Series, and Indy Car open-wheel racing (CART).

“We also owe a debt of gratitude to Budweiser, Lucas Oil, Mac Tools, and all the sponsors who have supported us, past and present,” Bernstein said. “Though we lose our sponsorship with Budweiser at the end of this year, the unprecedented 30-year relationship we have enjoyed allowed a Texas boy to follow his dream. Maybe our story will be an inspiration for others to be able to follow their dreams. It’s been a wonderful ride.”

Bernstein is the 21st inductee into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America from the world of NHRA Drag Racing. Others are Don Garlits (1989), Shirley Muldowney (1990), Don Prudhomme (1991), Connie Kalitta (1992), Wally Parks (1993), Bob Glidden (1994), Keith Black (1995), Bill Jenkins (1996), Art Chrisman (1997), Don Nicholson (1998), C.J. Hart (1999), Danny Ongais (2000), Tom McEwen (2001), Eddie Hill (2002), Ed Donovan (2003), Joe Amato (2004), Tommy Ivo (2005), Chris Karamesines (2006), Ronnie Sox and Buddy Martin (2007), and John Force (2008).

The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America is a museum housing more than 40 racing and high-performance vehicles and showcasing the stories of 175 Hall of Famers known as the Heroes of Horsepower. The constantly changing collection features racers from the world of Indy cars, stock cars, Can Am, Trans-Am, sprint cars, powerboats, truck racing, drag racing, motorcycles, air racing, and even snowmobiles

BRANDON BERNSTEIN LOOKING FOR THIRD VICTORY AT BRAINERD

BRAINERD, Minn. – The Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team has earned a starting berth in the coveted Countdown to 1 competition that will determine this year’s NHRA Full Throttle champions.  With a little breathing room before the start of the final six races when competitors will battle for the championship, the team is looking forward to the Lucas Oil Nationals Aug. 14-16.

Driver Brandon Bernstein, a two-time winner in Brainerd, is hoping to earn a third victory at this track and take home his 18th career ‘Wally.’

“Brainerd is a more ‘laid back’ venue with thousands of fans camping for the weekend on the race grounds,” said Bernstein.  “We have some great Budweiser fans that come back year after year to cheer us on, and of course, with Lucas Oil as the title rights sponsor, it gives us even more incentive to win.

“Our team had time following the West Coast Swing to comb through the performance data from those events and recharge their batteries before going into Brainerd.  We now have three races to fine-tune our combination. Even though we’ve secured a spot in the Countdown, we still need to go rounds to ensure that we stay in the top five in point standings.

“The first part of the season is tough enough, but we know the Countdown to 1 will be a real dogfight with everybody bringing their A game to the starting line.  It’s a real team effort.  The driver has to do his part in the cockpit, and the team can’t afford a misstep.”

Bernstein won consecutive events at Brainerd International Raceway in 2006 and 2007 and enters this year’s competition in fourth place in NHRA Full Throttle point standings.

BERNSTEIN CLINCHES A BERTH IN THE COUNTDOWN TO 1 AT SONOMA EVENT

SONOMA, Calif. (July 26) – Brandon Bernstein and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team earned a starting berth in the Countdown to 1 as a result of the points accumulated through the Fram Autolite Nationals.

“We accomplished our first goal, which was to clinch a spot in the playoffs,” said Bernstein.  “We have a little breathing room right now to fine-tune our combination before the Countdown begins.  That will give us Brainerd, Reading and the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals to try to accumulate more points and round wins.  We want to stay in the top five before the points are reset for Charlotte which is the first of six races in the dogfight that will determine the season’s champion.”

Bernstein claimed the No. 9 qualifying spot at the Fram Autolite Nationals with a 3.898/298.40.

In the opening round of eliminations, Bernstein and Tony Schumacher faced off against each other.  Bernstein had a slight reaction time edge out of the gate, and it was a close race to the 1000-foot mark with Schumacher illuminating the win light 3.872/307.93 vs. Bernstein’s 3.978/302.21.

“We hazed the tires a little on that run,” said Bernstein.  “We’ve chased a bit of a gremlin these last couple of races, but we’re seeing some progress and think we’re coming out on the other side.

“We have a two-week break before Brainerd which will give the team some time to comb through all the systems and analyze the data they’ve gathered on the West Coast Swing.”

The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team remains fourth in Full Throttle Top Fuel point standings.

BRANDON BERNSTEIN LOOKING FOR 18TH CAREER VICTORY IN SONOMA

SONOMA, Calif. – Fan favorite Brandon Bernstein hopes he and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team hold the keys to victory at the Fram Autolite Nationals July 24-26.

With four final round showings to their credit this season, the Kenny Bernstein team is looking to add a win on Sunday while Brandon is eyeing his 18th career Top Fuel trophy.

“We love coming to the wine country to race,” said the second generation driver.  “The Infineon Raceway facility is one of the premier venues on our circuit, media coverage is great, and we have some avid fans in Northern California.  Fram and Autolite are also sponsors of our Budweiser/Lucas Oil team, so there’s another incentive to bring home a trophy for the race title rights sponsor.  We would love to win this for Dad, Budweiser, Lucas Oil, Mac Tools, and our hometown sponsor in the Sonoma area, Matt Cordeiro and his family, as well as all the sponsors who have supported us through the years.

“We have a tremendous amount of talent and experience on our team and it gives us confidence every time we pull to the starting line.  We definitely are strong contenders and we’re hungry for a win.

“The key to winning this race will be negotiating a hot track.  Tune-ups will be on the edge and it will be a fine line between getting down the track and smoking the tires or going into tire shake.  As drivers, we will need to be on our toes and ready to pedal off and on the throttle if we run into loss of traction.  It’s definitely a team effort and the driver has to do his part.

“It’s challenging, but we’re up for it!”

With Budweiser recently announcing that they will not return in 2010 after 30 years of primary sponsorship with the Kenny Bernstein team, new sponsorship is being actively pursued.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM ON GOAL FOLLOWING SEATTLE

KENT, Wash. (July 19) -- The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team remains fourth in Full Throttle Top Fuel standings following the NHRA Northwest Nationals, staying on goal in their mission to stay in the top five in points when the points are reset four races from now as the season enters the Countdown to 1.

Bud/Lucas Oil pilot Brandon Bernstein qualified ninth at Pacific Raceways with a 3.938/304.25.

In the first round of eliminations, Bernstein rolled to the starting line to face off against Tony Schumacher.  The two drivers launched evenly out of the gate but early in the run the Bud/Lucas Oil dragster lost traction and spun the tires, while Schumacher had a trouble free run, taking the round win.

“We have a history of doing well at this track,” said Bernstein, “so we were doubly disappointed not to have gone rounds today.

“We are headed to Sonoma for the third and final race of the West Coast Swing and hope we can put some round wins in the bank there.”

With Budweiser recently announcing that they will not return in 2010 after 30 years of primary sponsorship with the Kenny Bernstein team, new sponsorship is being actively pursued.

BERNSTEIN LOOKING FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE
FINAL ROUND APPEARANCE IN SEATTLE

KENT, Wash. – As the NHRA season nears the cutoff for the Countdown to 1, Budweiser/Lucas Oil driver Brandon Bernstein hopes to continue the success he’s enjoyed at Pacific Raceways where he will be competing July 17-19 at the NHRA Northwest Nationals.

Bernstein has made final round appearances here three out of the five years he’s been at the wheel of popular dragster owned by his father, Kenny.  Brandon won the event in 2005 and scored two consecutive runner-up finishes in ’07 and ’08.  He was also the No. 1 qualifier in ’06.

“This has been a good track for us in the past,” confided Bernstein, “and we hope the trend continues. With five races remaining before the points are reset for the Countdown, we want to stay in the top five. We have been in the top four all season and it’s a dogfight for position.  Several of us are within a few points of each other and can be reshuffled in the standings after each event.  There’s a lot of pressure on the crew chiefs, and we want to be sure to do our job in the cockpit.  Race days are very intense.

“We have a lot of talent on our team and just need to keep racking up rounds.  Victories would be nice, too.”

At this point in the season, Bernstein has four runner-up finishes on his scorecard and three final four showings.

“With Rob Flynn and Mike Guger, their first season as crew chief and assistant crew chief, and for all our sponsors and especially my Dad, we’d sure like to make a drive to victory lane on Sunday.”

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM REMAINS FOURTH IN FULL THROTTLE TOP FUEL STANDINGS
FOLLOWING MOPAR MILE-HIGH NATIONALS

DENVER, Colo. (July 12) –  The positive outcome of the first leg of the NHRA West Coast Swing is that the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team remains fourth in Full Throttle point standings, though the 13th event of the season at Bandimere Speedway didn’t yield the results the team had hoped for.

After qualifying No. 8 in the 16-car Top Fuel field with a 4.008/304.94, driver Brandon Bernstein learned that the elimination ladder would pit him against his friend Morgan Lucas in the first round of Sunday’s Mopar Mile-High Nationals.

Bernstein and Lucas were the first pair down a hot racetrack Sunday and though it was a good battle, Lucas crossed the finish line first with a 4.005/295.66 vs. Bernstein’s 4.137/278.40.

“Even though we had qualified in the quick eight, we knew we were pretty evenly matched with Morgan who was the No. 9 qualifier. We definitely didn’t want to lose traction and beat ourselves, so Rob (Flynn, crew chief) put a safe tune-up in the car.  All crew chiefs were in the same position just pooling what knowledge they could gain from the qualifying data and maybe combining that with a bit of a roll of the dice.  We were the first pair down the racetrack so all the crew chiefs were watching to see what the track would hold.

“We’ll put this race behind us and put our energy into preparation for the next race in Seattle.  The Washington track has been a good one for us in the past and we’ve been to the final round three out of the five years we’ve competed there. We’re looking for another final round run.”

Also, Six-time champion and Budweiser/Lucas Oil team owner Kenny Bernstein returned to the tour this weekend after a recuperative period following May 26 back surgery.

“We wore out the computer at home listening to the race webcasts on nhra.com, as well as our television set as we watched hours of qualifying, NHRA Race Day and elimination programs on ESPN2,” said Kenny.  “It was good to be back out with the team.”

Budweiser Lager Lesson:  Budweiser is one of the most difficult beers to brew because it is fermented at cooler temperatures, thus taking more time to brew, yet resulting in a clean, crisp taste that you don’t get from other beers.

BERNSTEIN’S GOAL IS TO WIN DENVER AND MOVE UP IN POINTS
TO KICK OFF WEST COAST SWING

DENVER, Colo. -- The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team comes to the Mopar Mile-High Nationals July 10-12 on the heels of a runner-up finish at Norwalk, Ohio, his fourth final round appearance this season.

The Denver event kicks off three consecutive weeks of racing known as ‘The West Coast Swing.’

“We are six races from the cut-off that determines the top 10 teams that battle for the championship in the Countdown to 1,” said Bud/Lucas Oil dragster driver Brandon Bernstein.

“This is a critical time because we’re getting into the real heat of the summer and tracks become very tricky to negotiate in hot, sunny conditions.  Denver is especially tricky because of the altitude and it requires a one-off tune-up that isn’t used at any other event.

“We just came off a hot, tricky track in Norwalk and we think Rob (Flynn, crew chief) may have gained some valuable knowledge from that experience that will benefit us going forward.

“We’ve hovered in the top four in point standings all season and we need to keep going rounds in the Western Swing.  Points are reset for the last six races which comprise the Countdown to 1 and unless you stay in the top five, there’s a pretty good amount of point difference that’s hard to make up in only six races.

“It’s very competitive out there and the leaders are going rounds so you have to keep up.

“We’re excited that Dad will be joining us in Denver.  He had back surgery May 26 and was precluded from traveling for several weeks, so it will be nice to have him back on tour with us.  We hope he brings a little extra winning mojo with him.”

In addition to four runner-up finishes, the Kenny Bernstein-owned team also has three final four showings this season.

“We can just feel a win,” said Bernstein.  “This team is talented and we’re just so close.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the Mopar Mile-High Nationals begins Friday, July 10 at 5:30 p.m. with a second session at 8 p.m.  There are two qualifying sessions Saturday, 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. with final eliminations scheduled to begin Sunday at noon.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM LOGS FOURTH FINAL ROUND
APPEARANCE OF THE SEASON IN NORWALK

NORWALK, Ohio (June 28) – The Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team scored their fourth runner-up finish of the season at the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals.  It was their second consecutive runner-up finish in Norwalk and driver Brandon Bernstein’s 14th career second-place finish.

“Summit is one of our sponsors,” said Brandon, “and we were happy to make a final round showing for them at their event.”

Bernstein was the No. 6 qualifier with a 3.939/300.06.

After a rain-delayed race day start, the weather conditions changed dramatically becoming very hot and humid, causing crew chiefs to scramble to make tune-up changes. The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team took the first round victory over Tim Cullinan, 4.096/279.79 vs. 5.133/127.93.

"That was a great tune-up by Rob Flynn and the team to adapt to these conditions,” said Bernstein.  “That run had to be strong enough to win, especially with the heat and the sun, we didn't want to give it away."

In the second round against Troy Buff, Bernstein had a nice advantage out of the starting gate (Bernstein: .077-seconds, Buff:  .105-seconds).  Buff lost traction immediately. The Bud/Lucas Oil dragster suffered the same fate further down track, but Bernstein used his driving skills to first drive through tire shake, and then pedal the car as it lost traction, crossing the finish line first, 4.310/249.12 vs. 10.359/76.35.

“It wasn’t pretty but we got the win light,” said Bernstein. “Our Budweiser/Lucas Oil team thrashed to make the call for this round.  After the warm-up we had an oil leak and the team had to fix that and warm-up again to make sure we had cured the problem.  That was a great job by Rob Flynn and the team under pressure.”

In the semifinals, Bernstein pulled to the starting line to face Spencer Massey. Both drivers lost traction, but Massey spun the tires earlier in the run, allowing Bernstein to illuminate the win light, 4.172/260.56 vs. 4.449/105.39.

“We’re all really fighting the racetrack,” said Bernstein, “but we’re going to the final round! With Dad watching us on television at home, and for all our sponsors, we’d sure like to win today!”

In the money round, it was Bernstein and Larry Dixon, both second-generation drivers, facing off for the 29th time in their careers.  Bernstein had won their previous two final round match-ups, but this time it was Dixon who prevailed, using his quickest run of the day to take the win.

“We’re hanging right there with the leaders,” said Bernstein, “and that’s important because we’re only six races away from the Countdown to 1 cutoff.  Our next race is Denver, which starts the West Coast Swing.  Dad will be back with us then and maybe he’ll bring that little extra mojo we need to break into victory circle.”

Bernstein remains fourth in Full Throttle point standings and is less than two rounds, 34 and 37 points respectively, out of third and second place.

Kenny Bernstein update:  Kenny continues with physical therapy following his May 26 back surgery, and is now able to drive and take short outings.

“We want to take a moment to thank all the fans, media, and drag racing fraternity members who have sent us well wishes for a speedy recovery,” said Bernstein.  “With all the modern technology, we have been able to keep up with racing in real time, but we’re eager to be back

on tour with the team.  We’re very proud of the team’s performance in Norwalk.  Those were tough racing conditions.”

BRANDON BERNSTEIN SITS FOURTH IN NHRA FULL THROTTLE POINTS
AS SEASON HITS HALFWAY MARK

NORWALK, Ohio – The Summit Racing Equipment Nationals June 26-28 mark the halfway point of the NHRA season, and the 12th race out of 18 before the field is set with the top ten point contenders who will then wage a battle for the championship during the last six races of the season.

The Kenny Bernstein –owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team has sustained a position in the top four Top Fuel point standings all season.

“It’s critical to stay as high in the standings as we can,” said driver Brandon Bernstein, “because the points are reset at the start of the final six races. With so few races remaining, it’s tough to make up rounds and points.

“Our team is a legitimate challenger each time we go to the starting line.  But what might turn the tables and reshuffle the deck is that we’re about to head into the real hot summer months which require a different tune-up.  Hot, slick tracks require a lot of tuning finesse.”

Bernstein has three runner-up finishes to his credit this season and three final four showings.

“Dad is at home recovering from back surgery,” said Brandon.  “We miss him being out here with us, but he’s planning to join the team in Denver in July.  He’s getting stronger each day.  While he’s home he listens to Bob Frey on the NHRA audiocast on the internet so he is hearing the competition in real time.  We’re in touch by phone.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying begins Friday, June 26 at 4:30 p.m., with a second session at 7:30 p.m.  There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., with Top Fuel scheduled to kick-off eliminations Sunday at 11 a.m.

Notable:  Kenny Bernstein was named as one of seven who will be inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in its annual ceremony Wednesday, August 12 at the Fillmore Theater in Detroit.  Each inductee receives the Hall of Fame’s prestigious original bronze statuette “Horsepower” award.

BRANDON BERNSTEIN WILL BE CELEBRITY JUDGE
AT HOOTERS INTERNATIONAL SWIMSUIT PAGEANT

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – For the second consecutive year Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster driver Brandon Bernstein will be a celebrity judge at the Hooters International Swimsuit Pageant on June 20th.

Over 130 of the hottest Hooters Girls from around the world will be competing for the Miss Hooters International title.

The celebrity panel will also include ‘N Sync member Joey Fatone; Eddie George, former Heisman Trophy winner and Tennessee Titans tailback; New York Giants middle linebacker Antonio Pierce; former Dolphins wide receiver Mark Duper; former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson; and Patricia Kara, NBC’s ‘Deal or No Deal’ case model No. 9.

This year’s competition will be held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.  If you can’t make it to Hollywood, your favorite Hooters restaurant will broadcast the competition live at 7 p.m. EST.

“This is one of my favorite events of the year,” said Bernstein.  “I’ll be twittering from the judges’ table and will be sending photos out to our followers.”

BRANDON BERNSTEIN ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS IN ENGLISHTOWN

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 14) – Kenny Bernstein has dominated victory circle at Old Bridge Raceway Park through the years, winning seven events, more than any other driver.

“When you see the Budweiser/Lucas Oil rig pull into this famous track, it’s a pretty awesome sight,” said second generation driver Brandon Bernstein.  “There’s a real sense of pride in our family about our accomplishments at this landmark track.”

At the UA SuperNationals, Brandon had hoped to earn his 18th career victory and continue the family tradition.  The team qualified in the top half of the field and put a first round victory in the books before losing by a narrow margin in the quarterfinals.

Bernstein qualified No. 7 with a 3.884/302.48.

Spencer Massey was Bernstein’s opponent in the first round of eliminations.  After a near- even start, Bernstein led at every increment crossing the 1000-foot marker with a winning 3.865/307.65 to Massey’s 3.983/290.69.

“We were second pair down the racetrack,” said Bernstein.  “So you hold your breath and hope you’ve got a tune-up that the track will hold.  Rob (Flynn, crew chief) and the team were right on the money and we put another 20 Full Throttle points in the bank.”

Bernstein transferred to the second round to face Larry Dixon.   Even with nearly .04-second starting line advantage, Bernstein wasn’t able to fend off Dixon’s hard charging dragster.  In a near photo finish the win light went to Dixon by a shear one-hundredth of a second difference.

“We didn’t have the preferred lane on that run,” said Bernstein, “so I knew it would be a big help if we could cut a good light.  Rob’s tune-up got us down the track without losing traction, which was a big accomplishment by itself, but Dixon got by us.”

Bernstein is fourth in NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel point standings.

Kenny Bernstein post-surgery update:  The six-time NHRA champion continues to recover in California following back surgery May 26 to relieve stenosis, or narrowing of the spinal canal.  Doctors have removed the staples from his incision and he is more comfortable as he continues with post-op physical therapy.

“We’re still on target to join the team in Denver,” said Bernstein. “We’re up walking around and we’re more mobile each day.”

2005 BUD HELMET HOLDS EMOTIONAL MEMORIES FOR BRANDON BERNSTEIN
Brandon Bernstein, driver of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster, wore this helmet while driving to two victories during the 2005 NHRA drag racing season: St. Louis and Seattle.

The St. Louis victory was a particularly emotional and memorable one for the Bernstein family. It was the last time Bernstein patriarch Bert, Kenny’s father, attended a race before succumbing to cancer two months later.

“Dad and I will always remember that weekend,” said Brandon. “Not only did we win the race, but we celebrated Granddad’s 82nd birthday as well. It was a great victory in Bud’s backyard. “In Seattle we shared winner’s circle with our friend Eric Medlen who had won the Funny Car trophy,” said Bernstein. “We have pictures of us together and as usual, he was clowning around and sticking his tongue out at the camera. We miss Eric every single day but we have happy memories from that race.”

The Bernstein family and Budweiser are celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2009, but this year will be the last of Budweiser sponsorship.

Budweiser/Bernstein items will be collectibles from a dynasty that spanned three decades and will be treasured by race fans.

MONSTER HELMET WORN BY KENNY BERNSTEIN THE LAST YEAR HE DROVE PROFESSIONALLY; CREDITED FOR SAFETY IN HIGH-SPEED CRASH WITH JOHN FORCE
Six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein came out of retirement in 2007 to drive the Monster Energy Funny Car.  The helmet he wore that year is offered as a valuable piece of memorabilia.

Not only is this helmet a cherished collector item because of its significance as the helmet worn by Bernstein the last year he drove a nitro-fueled car, it is also the helmet he credits with keeping him safe during the much-publicized crash with John Force in Dallas.

“In a high-speed crash where you sustain multiple impacts with another car and the wall, you rely heavily on your helmet for protection,” said Bernstein.  “Thankfully we survived without major injuries, and we’re glad that John recovered to race again.  >From where I sat, it was a pretty intense experience.

“We really wanted to hang on to this helmet, but we’ve decided to let it go for a good cause.”

BRANDON BERNSTEIN HOPES TO CONTINUE FAMILY TRADITION IN ENGLISHTOWN

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. –Kenny Bernstein held the keys to victory at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The six-time national champ drove to the winner’s circle seven times in his career, more than any other NHRA professional driver in any category.

When second generation driver Brandon Bernstein comes to the United Association SuperNationals June 12-14, he hopes to begin to build upon that legacy.  The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team was runner-up at this event last year and they were the No. 1 qualifier in 2006.

“When we think about this track, it’s never lost on me that we had a bad experience here in 2003 when we were injured,” said Bernstein, “but we’ve put that behind us and when we’re in competition mode, it’s a track just like any other.

“We have a very competitive team right now,” continued Bernstein, “and we’re looking for that day of redemption.  Of all tracks, this is certainly one we’d like to conquer.

“Additionally, we’re on the downhill side of the Countdown to 10, and we’ve maintained a top three spot in the point standings since the beginning of the year.  It’s critical for us to continue to be consistent and gain round wins so we can have a strong position when the points are reset for the Countdown to 1.

“Dad is at home recovering from back surgery and he won’t be able to join us at Englishtown. We miss him, and maybe he can send us some good mojo for winning via telepathy.  He listens to Bob Frey on the NHRA audiocast on the internet so he is hearing the competition in real time.  We’re in touch by phone.”

With Budweiser recently announcing that they will not return in 2010 after 30 years of primary sponsorship with the Kenny Bernstein team, new sponsorship is being actively pursued.

BRANDON BERNSTEIN CLAIMS 200TH ROUND WIN IN CHICAGO

JOLIET, Ill. (June 7) – Route 66 Raceway can be one of the most unpredictable tracks on the NHRA circuit. It can also be one of the quickest. The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team has celebrated victories here in the past, including an historical run in 2001 when Brandon Bernstein piloted his A-Fuel dragster to victory circle to join his father who had captured the Top Fuel trophy.  Six-time NHRA champ Kenny Bernstein set national and track records here.

“It takes a lot of horsepower to get down this track,” said Brandon.  “It’s easy to go into tire shake if you don’t have enough power, but then it’s a fine line between enough and too much.

If you find the right horsepower and clutch combination, you can go really quick and fast here. This track has seen a lot of national record-setting runs.”

At the United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals, rain played havoc with Saturday qualifying and caused delays on Sunday.

The Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster qualified 12th with a 3.927/298.60.

In the opening round of eliminations, Bernstein faced off against Shawn Langdon. Bernstein was first out of the gate and never looked back while Langdon struggled with a mechanical malfunction at half track.  Bernstein scored his 200th career round victory with a 3.918/308.78 vs. Langdon’s 5.071/135.29.

In the quarterfinals, Bernstein and Clay Millican were even out of the gate, but Millican edged Bernstein for the win at the finish line with a 3.904/302.48 vs. Bernstein’s quickest run of the weekend, 3.916/309.84.

“It was a close race,” said Bernstein, “but we wish we had been on the winning end of it.

“This was a tough weekend for us as we fought to get the combination dialed in.

“We’re off to Englishtown next weekend, and we’ll see if we can get a win.  My dad won there seven times.  We were runner-up last year, and we’re overdue for a win. This year we’d sure like to add an East Coast trophy to the Bernstein collection.”

Bernstein remains third in NHRA Full Throttle point standings.

Kenny Bernstein Post-Surgery Update:  Kenny Bernstein has begun physical therapy following a back operation May 26 in California to relieve stenosis, or narrowing of the spinal canal.  He will undergo approximately 12 weeks of post-op rehabilitation and is expected to join his Budweiser/Lucas Oil team in Denver July 10-12 for the Mopar Mile-High Nationals.

“We’re getting a little stronger each day,” said Bernstein.  “Since the surgery, the blood vessels and nerves have a little more room in the spinal column. We’re following doctors’ orders and walking a little further each day.  It’s a little slow right now, but we’ve made quite a bit of improvement these past five or six days.

“We’re looking forward to getting back to the track with the team next month.”

Budweiser Lager Lesson:  Budweiser is one of the most difficult beers to brew because it is fermented at cooler temperatures, thus taking more time to brew, yet resulting in a clean, crisp taste that you don’t get from other beers.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM CONTINUES SOLID PERFORMANCE
AS COUNTDOWN TO 10 HITS HALFWAY MARK

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 31) – O’Reilly Summer Nationals competitors knew that race day at Heartland Park was going to be tricky. The thermometer would hit 90 degrees and track temperatures would soar making a slick racing surface.  Crew chiefs knew the key to winning rounds would be getting to the finish line under power.

The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team continued their strong qualifying performance (3.887/307.02), nabbing the No. 4 starting berth for the third time this season.

In the first round of race day competition, Bernstein faced off against Doug Kalitta.

Bernstein was first out of the gate and never looked back, crossing the finish line with a 3.985/297.22 vs. Kalitta’s 4.080. 293.41.

“Doug is always on his game at the starting line,” said Bernstein, “and you really have to be up and ready because how quickly you get out of the gate is a critical factor in winning a round.

Our Budweiser/Lucas Oil team puts in a lot of effort and I don’t want to let them down.  “Rob (Flynn, crew chief), Mike (Guger, assistant crew chief) and the team did a great job with the tune-up.”

In the quarterfinals, Bernstein and Clay Millican were off to a great looking race, but the Bud/Lucas Oil dragster lost traction and spun the tires about half track and then hooked back up again to no avail as Millican crossed the finish line first, 4.026/295.46 vs. Bernstein’s 4.097/280.31.

“That was a backbreaker,” said Bernstein.  “We have a good car but that quick slip of the tires probably cost us the round win.  “Ironically the top four point leaders all lost in the second round so theoretically we stayed pretty much status quo.”

Bernstein is third in NHRA Full Throttle standings, 66 points out of the lead, and 23 out of second place.

KENNY BERNSTEIN UNDERGOES BACK SURGERY IN CALIFORNIA

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (May 26)—Doctors at Hoag Hospital performed back surgery today on six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein to relieve stenosis, or narrowing of the spinal canal. The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team owner had been suffering from pain in his lower back and numbness in his legs.  After undergoing a battery of tests, doctors determined surgery was needed to correct the trauma and inflammation that was causing the pain.

As part of the recuperative process, travel has been precluded for the next few weeks.  It is expected that in addition to the Topeka event, he will miss Chicago and Englishtown.

“It seems that the years of driving race cars have taken a bit of a toll on my back,” said Bernstein.  “This isn’t unusual as many drivers suffer from back ailments after years of absorbing vibration from these 8,000-horsepower engines.

“We’ll get this turned around and we’ll be back out with the team soon.  In the meantime, we’ll be listening to Bob Frey on the NHRA internet audiocast and watching Mike (Dunn), Paul (Page), Dave (Rieff), and Gary (Gerould) on the ESPN2 broadcast.  Of course we’ll be in constant contact with Brandon, Rob Flynn, and the team by phone.”

It is expected that Bernstein will be hospitalized for the next two to three days.  Updates on his condition will be given periodically.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM HOPING TO MAINTAIN POSITION
IN TOP OF POINT STANDINGS AS COUNTDOWN TO 10
PASSES HALFWAY MARK IN CHICAGO

JOLIET, Ill. – The Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team has maintained position in the top three in Full Throttle point standings since the 2009 NHRA season began.  As the circuit rounds the corner and heads into the last nine races that will determine the Countdown to 10, the team will need to continue to go rounds and accumulate points as racing enters the tune-up challenging summer months.

The Union Plumbers, Fitters, Welders and HVAC Techs Nationals June 4-6 marks the 10th race of the season.

“We hit our objectives coming out of the gate this year with solid, consistent, competitive performances,” said six-time champion Kenny Bernstein. “With our new crew chief Rob Flynn and assistant crew chief Mike Guger, we’ve found a good mix with the team members who have been with us the past few years.  Brandon has been doing a good job driving and we’re just hovering in the top three in point standings.

“Hopefully we can continue with this consistency through the hot summer months and be within striking distance as the Countdown begins later this year. The racetracks during the summer months require a different tune-up. It’s much more difficult to get traction to the ground.”

“From the cockpit, it’s exciting to know that every time you pull to the starting line you have a good chance to win,” said Brandon, who took over the driving chores from his legendary father in 2003.

So far this season the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team has scored three runner-up and three final four showings in eight races.

The second generation driver shared victory circle in Chicago with his father in 2001 when he drove an alcohol dragster and his father was piloting the Budweiser dragster, accumulating points toward his sixth NHRA championship.

Brandon was runner-up in Chicago in 2004.

“It would be pretty nice to be able to win in Chicago,” said Brandon.  “We haven’t won at this track driving the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster.  Dad won here twice, including the inaugural event, and was in the final round four out of six years, so we would like to continue the family legacy.”

SIX-TIME NHRA CHAMP KENNY BERNSTEIN SAYS BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM
IN GOOD POSITION TO CHALLENGE FOR THE POINT LEAD

TOPEKA, Kan. – Hall of Famer and six-time NHRA champion team owner Kenny Bernstein said his Budweiser/Lucas Oil team is on goal for this season as they head for the O’Reilly Summer Nationals May 29-31.

“We wanted to come out of the gate this year with solid, consistent, competitive performances,” said Bernstein. “With our new crew chief Rob Flynn and assistant crew chief Mike Guger, we’ve found a good mix with the team members who have been with us the past few years.  Brandon has been doing a good job driving and we’re just hovering in the top three in point standings.

“Hopefully we can continue with this consistency through the hot summer months and be within striking distance as the Countdown begins later this year.”

“From the cockpit, it’s exciting to know that every time you pull to the starting line you have a good chance to win,” said Brandon, who took over the driving chores from his legendary father in 2003.  “It helps build confidence.  Right now we’re riding some pretty good momentum and our team morale is high.”

So far this season the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team has scored three runner-up and three final four showings in eight races.

The second generation driver has driven to the finals at Heartland Park three out of the five years in which he has competed.  He took home the Top Fuel trophy in 2004 and 2007 and was runner-up in 2006.

“It would be pretty nice to be able to win in Topeka,” said Brandon.  “We’ve been knocking at the door of victory and it’s time we opened the door and walked through.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying begins Friday, May 29 at 4:30 p.m., with a second session at 7 p.m.  There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, noon and 2:30 p.m., with Top Fuel scheduled to kick-off eliminations Sunday at 11 a.m.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM CONTINUES TO RACK UP
VALUABLE FULL THROTTLE POINTS IN BRISTOL

BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 17) – Bristol Dragway is a very special, one-of-a-kind dragstrip that is built in a valley that gives a thunder-like echo.  Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster driver Brandon Bernstein said driving into the racetrack puts you into a competitive frame of mind, especially with the famous NASCAR oval track looming next to the dragstrip.

Bernstein arrived at the strip Sunday morning feeling confident about going rounds, especially after securing the No.2 qualifying berth with a 3.875/312.64.

“We witnessed weather whiplash at this year’s Thunder Valley Nationals,” said Bernstein.  “It was hot and humid during the two days of qualifying and then race morning it was cool with tight track conditions. That means the data the team accumulated during qualifying didn’t have much validity for race day tune-ups, but it’s easier to tune for cooler track temperatures.  We were pretty sure we could adapt to these conditions and throw down some competitive numbers.

The Kenny Bernstein-owned team went to the semifinals, accumulated points, and eliminated a key player in the point standings.

In the opening round of eliminations, Bernstein faced off against Joe Hartley.  Both drivers dropped cylinders at the hit of the throttle.  Hartley then lost traction while the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster continued down track displaying a quick flash of flames as it crossed the finish line, taking the round win.

“It wasn’t a pretty run and it looks like we tried to push a head gasket out,” said Bernstein, surveying his race car after the run.  “It was important to get those round points, and the team will dive into our Mac tool box and get busy replacing parts and probably make an engine swap.”

In round two Bernstein’s red Bud machine, with a fresh engine, pulled to the starting line to square off against Antron Brown.  Bernstein was first out of the gate and led the way to the finish line, taking a huge round win with his quickest run of the weekend, 3.862/304.25 vs. Brown’ 3.873/315.86.

“Antron and I are very close friends.  He is a tough competitor so it was exciting to get that round win to take a bite out of the points lead he’s got right now,” said Bernstein.  “That was a great job by Rob (Flynn, crew chief) and the team.”

In the semifinals Bernstein and Tony Schumacher were neck and neck until mid-track when Schumacher began to get a little bit of an edge which he was able to hold until the finish line.  Schumacher’s numbers were 3.836/314.61 vs. Bernstein’s 3.884/313.29.

“I guess the only thing you can say was that we were on the wrong end of a good drag race,” summarized the second generation driver.  “We ran consistently today, though, and accumulated points.”

Bernstein continues to sit comfortably in the No. 3 position in NHRA Full Throttle point standings, well within striking distance of second place (20 points) and the leader (65 points).

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM LOOKING FOR THIRD WIN IN BRISTOL

BRISTOL, Tenn. –Brandon Bernstein, driver of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster, comes to the Thunder Valley Nationals May 15-17 on the heels of a runner-up finish at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis.

It was his third final round showing in seven events.

“We would like to seal the deal in Bristol,” said Bernstein.  “We have performed well in Bristol in the past, and it’s a track where we really enjoy competing.

“Our Bud/Lucas Oil team has proven it’s a contender and our performance has been consistent, so we’ve been riding in the top three in NHRA Full Throttle point standings for the season.  We’re within striking distance of the lead and we’re hungry for a win.”

Bernstein is a two-time winner at Bristol Dragway, having won the Top Fuel trophies in 2003, his rookie season, and 2007.  He was also the No. 1 qualifier in 2003 and 2005.  In fact, after he won the 2003 event in Bristol, he took the lead in point standings.

“If the cards fell just right, we could take the point lead again,” said Bernstein.  “We’re only 44 points out of the lead, and 26 out of second place.  It isn’t going to be easy, but if we could put the magic together, it isn’t that much of a long shot.

Besides the three runner-up finishes this season, the Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team has two final four showings.

With Budweiser recently announcing that they will not return in 2010 after 30 years of primary sponsorship with the Kenny Bernstein team, new sponsorship is being actively pursued.

BERNSTEIN RUNNER-UP AT BUDWEISER’S HOME TRACK

MADISON, Ill. (May 3) – The Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team kept the season’s momentum rolling, scoring their third runner-up finish in seven NHRA national events.  At the O’Reilly Midwest Nationals driver Brandon Bernstein, who showed his driving skills by having the quickest reaction time against all four of his race day opponents, scored round wins against steep competition before a close final round loss to Antron Brown.

“We were so pumped up coming into this race,” said Brandon.  “In the moments after the final round we were very disappointed not to have gotten a win for Budweiser here in their backyard to cap our 30th anniversary.  But you have to stand back and take a look at the big picture.  Three final rounds in seven races is something we can be very proud of as a team.”

The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team qualified ninth at Gateway International Raceway with a 3.944/297.02.

In the first round of eliminations, the Bud/Lucas Oil team bettered their qualifying numbers to win wire to wire in a close match with Clay Millican, 3.900/302.82 vs. 3.919/306.74.

“Rob (Flynn, crew chief) and Mike (Guger, assistant crew chief) made a lot of changes between the end of qualifying and race day.  During qualifying we were getting some tire spin down track, so they were making adjustments to compensate for that. We thought we were making the right moves, but we really had to be ready for anything,” said Bernstein. “As it turned out the tune-up was just what the doctor ordered and it got us a round win.”

In the quarterfinals, Bernstein prepared to face off against Morgan Lucas. The two friends suited up, walked to each other and pumped fists before getting buckled into their respective 8,000-horsepower machines.

Bernstein rolled off another consistent 3.905-second elapsed time at 305.22 mph, while Lucas battled traction problems, clocking 4.511/202.18.

“Morgan and I have raced each other on a number of occasions,” explained Bernstein, “so when we get to the starting line, we just focus on our lane and our jobs. It’s tough because only one of us is going forward.

“His family sponsors our team so we will carry the Lucas Oil banner into the semis.”

In the semis, it was Bernstein vs. Spencer Massey.  Bernstein’s run was quick and trouble free and he sprinted across the finish line with a winning 3.863/313.51, while Massey lost traction at the hit of the throttle on the starting line.

“Our goal coming into the weekend was to get to the finals in St. Louis,” said Bernstein.

“Now we need to seal the deal.”

In the money round against Antron Brown, Bernstein was quicker off the starting line, but Brown edged the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster for the trophy (Brown: 3.850/318.02 vs. Bernstein: 3.888/310.27).

“Sometimes I just wonder what it’s going to take to win,” lamented Bernstein.  “We had a great car all day long, and we really thought today was going to be the day. We had some of our friends from Budweiser at the track with us and the Bud was on ice.”

Bernstein continues to reside in third place in NHRA Full Throttle standings, 44 points out of the lead and 26 out of second place.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM LOOKING FOR A VICTORY IN ST. LOUIS
TO CAP 30TH ANNIVERSARY

MADISON, Ill. – For Kenny Bernstein and his Budweiser/Lucas Oil team, it will be a bittersweet trip to the O’Reilly Midwest Nationals.  The team is celebrating an unprecedented 30 years of sponsorship from the Budweiser brand of Anheuser-Busch, the longest team/sponsorship association in all of autosports.

“Sadly, this is the final year that Bud will be with our team,” said six-time champion and team owner Bernstein.  “We will look forward to seeing many of our friends at the racetrack.  It’s been a great ride, but as the cliché goes, ‘all good things must come to an end.’

“We are actively searching for a replacement sponsor so that we can continue to field the team with Brandon as driver.”

“We would love to bring home a victory at Gateway for the Budweiser brand,” said Brandon.  “That would be icing on the cake.”

The Bernsteins have driven the Budweiser colors to six final rounds at Gateway International Raceway.  Kenny won in 2002, the year of his “Budweiser…Forever Red” retirement tour.

Brandon won in 2005, a joyous celebration that included the Bernstein patriarch, Bert, Kenny’s father.  It was the last race Bert attended as he succumbed to cancer two months after he joined the team for their victory dinner.

“We always remember granddad each year at St. Louis,” said Brandon.  “He knew he wasn’t going to win the fight, but he had the best attitude and was so excited to be with us at the track.  It was a very special weekend; in fact we celebrated his 82nd birthday and the victory.   There are some wins that just stick in your mind forever and that’s one Dad and I will never forget.”

This season the Kenny Bernstein-owned team comes to St. Louis third in point standings with two runner-up finishes and two final four showings.

“We have been in the top three in point standings since the beginning of the season,” said Brandon. “We’re just hungry for a win.  St. Louis would be an excellent place for us to grab our 18th career victory.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the O’Reilly Midwest Nationals begins Friday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. with a second session at 6:30 p.m. There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., with eliminations scheduled to begin Sunday at 11 a.m.

BERNSTEIN STRONG IN ATLANTA QUALIFYING;
CONTINUES THIRD IN POINT STANDINGS

COMMERCE, Ga. (April 19) – At the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team nabbed the No. 2 qualifying spot (3.824/311.49) for the second time in three races displaying a strong, consistent performance.

In the opening round of eliminations at Georgia’s house of speed, Brandon Bernstein, who won the event here in 2007, squared off against Bobby Lagana, Jr.  Bernstein had the edge out of the gate and was on a nice run, pulling away, until his dragster began to haze the tires down track.  Though Bernstein was on and off the throttle, the fractions of a second lost while he tried to regain traction allowed Lagana, Jr. to obtain the round win.

“No matter how strong we had been running all weekend in qualifying, one little stumble today and that’s all it took,” said a disappointed Bernstein. “We had a great car these past two days, and we were looking good until about the 660-foot mark today. Our entire team is really focused and digging deep.

“We’re right in the hunt.  We’ll look forward to St. Louis in two weeks.”

Bernstein who has scored two runner-up and two final four finishes this season, continues to hold third place in NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel point standings.

BERNSTEIN LOOKING FOR 18TH CAREER VICTORY IN DIXIE

COMMERCE, Ga. – Brandon Bernstein won the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals in 2007, but he and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team want to take care of some unfinished business when they compete at Atlanta Dragway April 17-19.

The Kenny Bernstein-owned team started the season with a stellar performance and they have been in the top three in point standings, riding the momentum from race to race.

With two runner-up finishes and two semifinal showings in five races, the team has excelled, setting low elapsed time and speed marks along the way.

“Our team set goals at the beginning of the season and we’re pretty much on target,” said Bernstein.  “We are hungry for a win, though.  We are on the cusp of a victory; I can just feel it in my bones.  We have 17 career wins going in to Atlanta, and we’d sure like to have 18 at the end of the race day on Sunday.

“We are always striving for consistency because that’s what wins rounds and races.”

The second-generation driver took No. 1 qualifying honors at Atlanta Dragway in 2003 and 2006.

The Bernstein family and Budweiser are celebrating their 30th anniversary together, an unprecedented team/sponsor milestone, but Budweiser recently announced this will be the last year of sponsorship of the team.

“We are passionate about the sport of NHRA drag racing and we will continue to field a team in 2010 with Brandon as the driver if we can secure sponsorship,” said six-time champion Kenny Bernstein.

BERNSTEIN RUNNER-UP AT LAS VEGAS;
BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM SETS ELAPSED TIME AND TOP SPEED EVENT MARKS

LAS VEGAS (April 5) -- The Budweiser/Lucas Oil team launched the season with a strong performance and they continued to ride the momentum into the SummitRacing.com Nationals scoring their second runner-up finish in five starts.  The Kenny Bernstein-owned team also set elapsed time and top speed marks for the event.  They remain in the top three in Full Throttle point standings as they have since the season-opener.

Bernstein was the No. 11 qualifier at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a 4.027/281.13.

The second generation driver won the opening round of eliminations against Spencer Massey with the quickest run of the weekend, 3.871/317.57 vs. Massey's very competitive 3.922/309.77.   Besides scoring low elapsed time of eliminations the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team, also nabbed top speed of the meet with that run.

"I could hear Spencer the whole way down the track so I knew he was close,” said Bernstein. “We needed that big speed to cross the finish stripe first.  That was a good job by Rob (Flynn, crew chief) and the team."

In the quarterfinals, Bernstein rolled to the starting line to face Larry Dixon.  Another great tune-up on the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster produced a win and low elapsed time of the second round, 3.927 seconds, at 312.93 mph.  Dixon lost traction about half-track, crossing the finish line with a 4.210/232.79.

“We always get pumped up when we race Larry” said Bernstein.  “We’ve been running well today, we just need to keep it up.”

In the semifinals against Antron Brown, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team prevailed despite a mechanical gremlin.  There was a flash of fire from Bernstein’s dragster as the scoreboard reflected a winning 4.004/295.21.  In the opposite lane, Brown lost traction and followed Bernstein across the stripe with a 4.149/216.51.

“We pushed out a head gasket in that round,” confided Bernstein, “and the team had to change engines before the final. It was a hustle because we were under the gun for live television, but this crew is very professional.  Dad pitched in and I pitched in and we were on time for the final round bell.”

Bernstein transferred to the money round to face opponent Tony Schumacher who won the event with a 3.874/311.77 while Bernstein clocked 4.003/295.66.

“We had great performances in the first two rounds,” said Bernstein, “and set both elapsed time and mile per hour marks for this event.  It’s too bad we fell off a little at the end, but it certainly proves that we’re a contender.  We’re still going rounds and gaining points and that’s the goal.”

The second-generation driver remains third in NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel standings, 24 points out of the lead and 6 points out of second place.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM CONTINUES TO RIDE IN TOP THREE
IN NHRA TOP FUEL POINT STANDINGS

BAYTOWN, Texas (March 29) – Brandon Bernstein, a two-time winner at the O’Reilly Spring Nationals, continued his successes this year with a stellar qualifying performance.

Bernstein was the No. 2 qualifier at Houston Raceway Park with a 3.841/316.23.

In the opening round of eliminations Terry Haddock and Bernstein delivered a spirited match.   Bernstein was first out of the starting gate and never trailed, winning with a 3.887/315.49 vs. Haddock’s very competitive 3.958/304.05.

“Before we ran, there was an incident on the track with a Top Fuel car that blew an engine which caused a lot of shrapnel damage,” said Bernstein.  “That took 50 minutes of cleanup and you have to stay up mentally during all that down time to make sure you have a good reaction time off the line.  We stayed focused, the car lifted the front end when it left and ran straight and true for the round win. That was a tribute to Rob Flynn (crew chief), Mike Guger (assistant crew chief) and the team.”

In the quarterfinals, Bernstein faced off against Larry Dixon.  Bernstein had a nice cushion based on his quicker reaction time, but both cars lost traction down track. The drivers were off and on their throttles trying to get traction to the ground, but Dixon lurched across the finish line first, 4.400/248.43 vs. 5.072/165.17.

“There was a rash of tire smoke among the competitors that round,” said Bernstein.  “It was the hottest track we had raced on all weekend and there’s just a very fine tune-up line between loss of traction and the competitive edge.  Larry lost traction just a little further down track than we did so he had enough momentum to get the win.”

Bernstein is third in NHRA Top Fuel point standings, only one point out of second place and 21 points out of the lead.  Bernstein has maintained a position in the top three leaders since the beginning of the season.

BERNSTEIN HOPES TO ROCK LAS VEGAS FOR A SECOND TIME

LAS VEGAS – Brandon Bernstein, driver of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster, has started the 2009 season out with strong performances which have kept him in the top five in NHRA point standings and in contention for the lead.

Bernstein, a winner of the SummitRacing.com Nationals in 2007, is looking to reprise that performance when NHRA competition returns to the The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway April 3-5.

“We have the perfect party recipe,” laughed Bernstein, “four round wins on Sunday, which would give us a chance to celebrate with Summit, one of our team sponsors as well as the race title rights sponsor, and Las Vegas-based New York-New York.”

The winds of change have challenged and invigorated the team.  Crew chief Rob Flynn and assistant crew chief Mike Guger have come onboard this season, the first mechanical leadership change the team has had since Brandon’s 2003 rookie season in the cockpit of his legendary father’s Top Fuel dragster.

“We set goals to begin the season,” confided Brandon.  “We wanted to come out of the box with guns blazing.  We are running strong, consistent numbers and we are hovering at the top of the leader board in the point standings.  It’s very early, but consistency wins rounds and races.  We’re hungry for wins and a championship.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying begins Friday, April 3 at 1 p.m. with a second session at 4 p.m.  There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. with Top Fuel scheduled to kick off eliminations at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Six-time NHRA champion team owner Kenny Bernstein has extended his team’s official hotel relationship with the newly remodeled contemporary New York-New York Hotel & Casino for the NHRA national events at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

FAN FAVORITE BRANDON BERNSTEIN LOOKING FOR
THIRD NHRA TOP FUEL TITLE IN BAYTOWN

BAYTOWN, Texas – Two-time O’Reilly Spring Nationals Top Fuel titlist Brandon Bernstein, driver of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster, will be aiming for his third victory at Houston Raceway Park when the 2009 NHRA series makes a stop in Baytown March 27-29.

Bernstein scored victories here in 2004 and 2006.

He is currently second in NHRA point standings, only one round out of the lead.  In the first three outings this season, the Kenny Bernstein-owned team has logged two semi-final finishes and one runner-up.

“We are focused on consistency,” said the second generation driver, “because that will help us go rounds.  We attack race day one round at a time.

“Our goal was to start the season strong and we’re happy to be high in the point standings.  Our team is a contender each time we pull to the starting line.”

The Bernstein family and Budweiser are celebrating their 30th anniversary together, an unprecedented team/sponsor milestone, but Budweiser recently announced this will be the last year of sponsorship of the team.

KENNY BERNSTEIN’S PERSPECTIVE ON THE RELATIONSHIP WITH BUDWEISER

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (March 16) --  Quotes from Kenny Bernstein

“While we are disappointed by the news, the 30 years we’ve spent with Budweiser have been memorable and we’ve had experiences because of that relationship we’ll will never forget.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to all the Budweiser employees and wholesalers we’ve worked with through the years, as well as the fans and friends who have followed and supported us beginning with the Funny Car era.

“The Budweiser sponsorship has provided us the opportunity to make a career in the sport that we love while fielding championship-caliber teams through the years.  It has been a wonderful win-win relationship for three decades.

“As a driver, Brandon has 17 career victories to his credit and to this date holds the distinguished record of having the most successful career launch of any Funny Car or Top Fuel driver in NHRA history.

“We’re passionate about the sport of NHRA drag racing and plan to continue if we can secure sponsorship.  We are moving forward with the search for a replacement so that we can field an NHRA team in 2010 with Brandon as the driver.

“We are proud of our long-term sponsorships, not only with Budweiser, but we’re also celebrating our 31st season with LaPaz party mixes, 22nd anniversary with Mac Tools, and our seventh season with Lucas Oil.  We believe that taking a proactive role in initiating programs and promotions that help sell product and build brand awareness has been an integral part of retaining our sponsorship associations through the years.  Coupled with the success we’ve had on the racetrack while flying the Budweiser colors, including six NHRA championships and 85 national event victories between Brandon and me, then it’s a very attractive opportunity for another sponsor.

“We pride ourselves on ethics and integrity.  We recognize you can’t have success without good people, and we have a skilled staff that offers the opportunity for a turn-key program that is inclusive from marketing and sales to public relations, highlighted by a race team that is professional and capable of winning on Sunday.”

BUDWEISER SPONSORSHIP OF NHRA, KENNY BERNSTEIN RACING TO END AT CONCLUSION OF 2009 SEASON

ST. LOUIS (March 16, 2009) - Anheuser-Busch today announced the 2009 season will be Budweiser’s last as official beer sponsor of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and as primary sponsor of Kenny Bernstein Racing and the Budweiser Top Fuel dragster.

Budweiser has sponsored the NHRA since the early 1980s and is celebrating its 30th season with Kenny Bernstein Racing.  The Budweiser-Bernstein relationship is the longest running in motorsports history, eclipsing Scientifically Treated Petroleum’s (STP) 28-year sponsorship of Richard Petty in NASCAR.  Kenny Bernstein Racing, one of the sport’s most consistent winners, aims to continue racing if new sponsorship is secured for 2010.

“The NHRA and Kenny Bernstein Racing have been world class partners and we’re proud of everything we’ve accomplished together,” said Dan McHugh, vice president, Media, Sponsorship and Activation, Anheuser-Busch.  “For three decades Budweiser helped grow the sport while its association with the NHRA and Kenny Bernstein provided a unique opportunity to market to adult beer drinkers.”

“NHRA is grateful to Anheuser-Busch for their long association with the sport and Kenny Bernstein Racing,” said Gary Darcy, senior vice president of sales and marketing.  “Their 30-year run with the sport is a testament to the return on investment they’ve enjoyed and Kenny Bernstein’s personal commitment and dedication to the brand and its distributors.”

“Budweiser provided us the opportunity to make a career of doing what we love,” said Kenny Bernstein.  “We owe a debt of gratitude to all the Anheuser-Busch employees and wholesalers we’ve worked with, as well as the fans and friends who’ve followed and supported us all these years.”

In 30 years together, Budweiser and Kenny Bernstein Racing captured six NHRA titles, including four consecutive Funny Car crowns (1985-1988) and two Top Fuel titles (1996, 2001).  Kenny and son Brandon, who took the keys from his father in 2002, amassed 85 national event victories under the Budweiser flag and in 1992, Kenny became the first driver to surpass the 300 mile-per-hour barrier.

“The success and longevity of our relationship with the NHRA and Kenny Bernstein Racing is a tribute to their understanding of the Budweiser brand over the years,” said McHugh.  “For his part, Kenny Bernstein has been nothing less than the ultimate ambassador for the brand.  We thank him, his team and the NHRA for a great run.”

BERNSTEIN MAINTAINS SECOND PLACE IN POINT STANDINGS FOLLOWING FINAL FOUR FINISH IN GAINESVILLE

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 15) - Brandon Bernstein and the Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team made another solid performance at the ACDelco Gatornationals, finishing in the final four for the second time in three races.  With a runner-up finish also in the books this season, the team maintains second place in NHRA point standings only 20 points, or one round, out of the lead.

Bernstein was the No. 4 qualifier with a 3.922/312.64.

In the opening round of eliminations against Urs Erbacher, the Bud/Lucas Oil dragster edged toward the centerline and Bernstein had to make a strong correcting steering maneuver to coax the car back to take the round win with a 3.903/313.88 vs. Erbacher's 4.104/291.38.

"The car just drifted over toward the centerline and stayed there,” said Bernstein.  “We had to steer it back, but we got the win light.”

In the second round of eliminations, opponent Shawn Langdon smoked the tires while Bernstein went straight and fast to win the round, 3.935 seconds at 315.42 mph, for top speed of the event, once again proving that Bernstein and Gainesville Raceway are synonymous with speed. It was at this track in 1992 that Kenny Bernstein became the first to surpass the 300 mile-per-hour barrier.

"Rob (Flynn, crew chief) and the team have the car running really quick, fast and consistent,” said Bernstein.  “We've just got to keep it going.  Our Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster went straight as an arrow and didn't move around like it did in the first round."

Bernstein transferred to the semifinals to face Larry Dixon.  Bernstein lost traction early in the run and Dixon followed suit further down track but crossed the finish line first with a 4.091/260.71 vs. Bernstein's 5.546/128.49.

“The sun had been shining on the track and it was a little warmer,” explained Bernstein.  “We knew we had to run a good number, but we probably had a little too much power for the conditions.

“We’re three races into the season and we’ve shown a lot of consistency.  We’re very pleased to be sitting high in the point standings, and we’re a contender at every event.”

BRANDON BERNSTEIN LOOKING FOR SECOND VICTORY AT GAINESVILLE RACEWAY
WHERE FATHER MADE HISTORY WITH FIRST TO 300 MPH RUN

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Every year when NHRA competitors roll into Gainesville for the ACDelco Gatornationals, fans remember that historical date, March 20, 1992 that sent shockwaves through the motorsports world when Kenny Bernstein became the first to eclipse the elusive 300 mile-per-hour barrier.

Becoming the first to 300 mph won Kenny the nickname “King of Speed.” Bernstein calls this feat his most memorable, citing the fact that it is probably the last speed barrier in NHRA drag racing.

Gainesville Raceway continued to play a significant role in Bernstein family history when second-generation driver Brandon followed in his father’s footsteps, winning the ACDelco Gatornationals in his 2003 rookie season, setting a track record speed of 327.27 mph.

Last year Bernstein was runner-up in the Top Fuel category in Gainesville and is looking for his second win in Florida at the March 13-15 ‘09 event.

For the first time since he began his professional racing career, Brandon has started the season with a new crew chief, Rob Flynn, and assistant crew chief, Mike Guger. The new regime has proved to be contenders as the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team finished in the final four in the season opener at Pomona and were runner-up at the last race in Phoenix.

“Our goal was to start the season strong,” said Bernstein, “and so far we’ve accomplished that. We’re hungry for a win, but we are staying focused and attacking race day one round at a time. Consistency is the name of the game.

“We changed chassis manufacturers this year and there are some subtle cockpit differences which we were able to quickly adapt to during pre-season testing. We feel very comfortable right now, and we have a talented team with good personnel mesh, along with a lot of enthusiasm and drive. With these dynamics in our favor, we hope to keep accumulating round wins and stay in the hunt for the Countdown to 1.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the ACDelco Gatornationals begins Friday, March 13 at 12:30 p.m. with a second session at 3:30 p.m. There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., with Top Fuel kicking off eliminations Sunday at 11 a.m.

Notable: Kenny Bernstein was named as one of seven who will be inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in its annual ceremony Wednesday, August 12

at the Fillmore Theater in Detroit. Each inductee receives the Hall of Fame’s prestigious original bronze statuette “Horsepower” award.

BERNSTEIN AND BUD/LUCAS OIL TEAM RUNNER-UP AT PHOENIX;
NOW SECOND IN POINT STANDINGS

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 22) – Brandon Bernstein and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team made their first final round appearance of the season at the Lucas Slick Mist Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.  Their runner-up finish was a strong statement for the new tuning duo of crew chief Rob Flynn and assistant crew chief Mike Guger.

“We had three good consistent runs getting to the final,” said Bernstein, “and then the car surprised us by losing traction in the money round.

“We’re hungry for a win, but we’ve proven in just two outings this year, scoring a semifinal appearance and a runner-up finish, that we’re contenders.”

In qualifying, Bernstein drove to the No. 5 position with a 3.875-second elapsed time at 316.38 mph.

In the opening round of eliminations against Joe Hartley, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team took the round win with a 3.890/306.33 while Hartley lost traction at the hit of the throttle, coasting across the finish line with a 9.214/82.49.

In the second round, the Bernstein family had an opportunity to celebrate the round win as Spencer Massey was up in smoke and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team clocked another good consistent run, 3.844/310.05, to transfer to the semifinals.

“We’re just concentrating on winning one round at a time,” said Bernstein.  “So far, so good.”

In the semifinals, Bernstein squared off against Larry Dixon.  Bernstein crossed the finish line first with a strong 3.847/306.33 vs. Dixon's 8.900/76.26.

“That was a huge round win for us,” said Bernstein.  “Rob, Mike, and the team did a great job.  We’re just happy to be going to the final round.  We’re focused and ready to go.”

In the finals against Antron Brown, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster lost traction and began to spin the tires.  Bernstein was off and on the throttle trying to get power to the ground, but Brown took the win light with a 3.846/310.63.

Bernstein is second in NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel standings, 42 points out of the lead.

Budweiser Lager Lesson:  Budweiser is one of the most difficult beers to brew because it is fermented at cooler temperatures, thus taking more time to brew, yet resulting in a clean, crisp taste that you don’t get from other beers.

KENNY BERNSTEIN TO BE INDUCTED INTO
MOTORSPORTS HALL OF FAME OF AMERICA

LAKE FOREST, Calif.  (Feb. 13) – Kenny Bernstein was named as one of seven who will be inducted  into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in its annual ceremony Wednesday, August 12 at the Fillmore Theater in Detroit.

“We are very honored to have been chosen to join the elite members of the motorsports fraternity known as the Heroes of Horsepower,” said Bernstein.  “We have been fortunate through the years to have some success on the racetrack and to be inducted into this prestigious Hall of Fame is icing on the cake.”

Bernstein, a six-time NHRA champion, was the first to break drag racing’s 300 mph barrier, and the first to win championships in Funny Car and Top Fuel.  He holds the unique distinction of being the first and only race team owner to have collected wins in each of America’s three major motorsports series:  NHRA drag racing, NASCAR, and CART (now IndyCar Series).

In addition to Bernstein, this year’s inductees include David Hobbs, Scott Parker, Les Richter, Al Unser, Jr., H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler and the late Joe Weatherly.

Eligibility for induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame is extended to any person who has driven, piloted, owned, designed, built, supported, maintained, prepared or promoted motorized vehicles in pursuit of speed, distance or other records.  An inductee must have been retired for at least three years or must have been engaged at the top level of his or her area of motorsports for at least 20 years.  Inductees are characterized by their desire to win, mastery of their field and the courage to innovate.

A panel of historians, retired competitors, journalists, and prior living inductees vote for the final selections.  Each inductee receives the Hall of Fame’s prestigious “Horsepower” award – an original bronze statuette created by Ann Arbor, Michigan sculptor Michael Curtis.

BRANDON BERNSTEIN LOOKING FOR VICTORY NUMBER THREE
AT LUCAS OIL SLICK MIST NATIONALS

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Firebird International Raceway holds a special place in the history books for the Bernstein family.  Six-time champion Kenny Bernstein and his son Brandon both earned their first Top Fuel victories at this track.  Kenny scored his Firebird win in 1991 and Brandon won here in his second national event appearance in his 2003 rookie season, defending the Top Fuel title again in 2004.

The Bernstein family hopes to capitalize on past achievements at this year’s Lucas Oil Slick Mist Nationals Feb. 20-22.

In the rain-delayed season-opener at Pomona, Calif., driver Brandon Bernstein tallied a final four finish and he and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team come into Firebird International Raceway tied for third in point standings.

“When you’ve had success at a track, it gives you a certain amount of confidence

when you return,” said Brandon.  “In pre-season testing here, we ran a stunning 323.50 mph.  We had the right set up at the right time of day.  Hopefully we can repeat that kind of performance for the national event.

“Obviously our team goal is to have a run at the championship.  Right now we’re positioned well in point standings, so we want to keep going rounds and hopefully snag a few victories this season.

“There’s great synergy with our new crew chief Rob Flynn and assistant crew chief Mike Guger.  We feel we have tremendous potential and the entire team is optimistic and positive.

“With the rain forcing cancellation of a lot of qualifying in Pomona and the race being postponed for a couple of days due to Mother Nature, none of the race teams have really had an opportunity to get into a rhythm.  Hopefully the weather gods will smile upon us in Phoenix and we can get all four qualifying runs in the books and get into a good tempo.

“However, it is comforting to know that Rob Flynn has a lot of experience to draw upon whether we have one run to get into the show or four runs.  We’re excited about the season.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying begins Friday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. with a second session at 4:30 p.m.  There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., with Top Fuel kicking off eliminations at 11 a.m. Sunday.

BUDWEISER/LUCAS OIL TEAM TIED FOR THIRD PLACE IN POINT STANDINGS
AS RAIN DELAYED KRAGEN O’REILLY WINTERNATIONALS CONCLUDES ON TUESDAY

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 10) -Mother Nature played havoc with the NHRA season-opening Kragen O’Reilly Winternationals.

Persistent rain forced cancellation of three qualifying sessions and ultimately it was a sole mid-afternoon qualifying session on Saturday that set the field for Sunday’s eliminations.  Bernstein qualified fourth in the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster with a 3.866/317.42.

“With the weather conditions being as iffy as they were, it was a little stressful,” confided Bernstein.  “You definitely wanted to make the show but there was a pretty big possibility that you might only get one shot to make the field, and in fact, we only did get one run.  A tip of the helmet to our new crew chief Rob Flynn and assistant crew chief Mike Guger who did a great job getting us in the top of the field."

In the rain-delayed opening round of race day eliminations, Bernstein squared off against Andy Carter. Both drivers lost traction early in the run and were on and off the throttle.  Carter drifted toward the center line as body panels begin to fly off the car, and then crossed the center line.  Despite Carter's quicker elapsed time (4.525/239.23 vs. Bernstein’s 4.758/192.69), Bernstein was awarded the round win as Carter was disqualified for crossing the center line.

"The car spun the tires and I saw Andy drive right past me,” said Bernstein. “I thought it was over, but in the end, with his disqualification we got a break and an opportunity to advance to round two."

After the first round of eliminations, rain returned and racing was again postponed.

Quarterfinals racing resumed two days later under sunny skies following a total Monday rain out.

Bernstein drove to the starting line to face reigning Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher.  Bernstein was first off the line and never looked back, crossing the finish line first with a 3.834/311.49 to Schumacher’s 3.865/313.44.

“The car sat down and made a hard move,” said the second-generation driver.  “Rob, Mike and the team did a great job that round.  I hope we can keep the momentum for two more rounds.”

In the semifinals against Antron Brown, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster lost traction shortly after the launch and Brown advanced to the finals.

“Smoking the tires caught us a little off-guard,” said Bernstein.  “We had such a good run the round before we were hoping to keep the mojo going. Because of the rain and subsequent cold weather, track conditions were tricky.”

“Our hearts go out to Rob Flynn who lost his father (Bob) unexpectedly Monday evening to a massive heart attack,” said team owner Kenny Bernstein.  “Rob was flying to Edmonton, Canada immediately after the race to be with his mother and prepare for his father’s services.

“We know it was a difficult day for him, but we want to commend him for doing an excellent job under a very stressful situation. He was a consummate professional.”

Bernstein is tied for third in Top Fuel Full Throttle point standings following the first race of the season.

BERNSTEIN LOOKING TO OPEN SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE

POMONA, Calif. – Kenny and Brandon Bernstein would like to make their unprecedented 30th anniversary celebration with Budweiser even more special by kicking the ’09 season off with a strong showing at the Kragen O’Reilly Auto Parts Winternationals Feb. 5-8 at Auto Club Raceway.

“It’s a new season, we have a new crew chief and high hopes to be a championship contender,” said Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster driver Brandon Bernstein.

“We are excited about having Rob Flynn calling the shots this season, and Mike Guger backing him up as assistant crew chief.  They have come onboard strong with great ideas and they’re a good fit with the team members who have been with us in previous years.

“In pre-season testing we ran a smoking hot 3.814 at 323.50, so we are pumped!

“We are also using a different chassis this season.  We switched from a McKinney to a Hadman chassis so during testing we had a chance to familiarize ourselves with the new feel in the cockpit. The pedals are a little different, just small things, but we feel very comfortable now.”

Bernstein was runner-up at the 2007 season opener and was a contender for the Top Fuel championship that year until the semifinal round of the final event, also at Auto Club Raceway.

“Fans are going to continue to see some dog fights in the Top Fuel division this year,” continued Bernstein. “Pre-season testing shows that everyone is coming to this first event

with guns blazing.  We know there is economic unrest and it’s tough on everyone right now.

“NHRA has instituted a fan relief program and is offering a limited number of $20 tickets.  If you’re coming out to watch the races, you won’t be disappointed.  Racing will be intense.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) racing begins Thursday, Feb. 5 at 2:30 p.m. with a second session Friday at 2:30 p.m.  There are two qualifying rounds scheduled for Saturday, noon and 3:30 p.m. with final eliminations set to begin Sunday at 11 a.m.

Budweiser Lager Lessons:  In the mid-nineteenth century, German-American brewers perfected the crisp, refreshing beer style now called American lager, changing not only Americans’ choice of beers, but how and where Americans enjoyed beer, ultimately converting America into a country of beer lovers.

KENNY AND BRANDON BERNSTEIN:
TWO GENERATIONS OF RACING EXCELLENCE

LAKE FOREST, CA – With new crew chief Rob Flynn making the tune-up calls on the Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster for the 2009 season, the team is motivated and fighting for a seventh family championship, the first for second-generation driver Brandon.

Team owner Kenny Bernstein dominated Funny Car competition in the 1980s, racking up four consecutive NHRA championships (1985-1988) during a decade in which his team’s technological advances changed the face of competition.  He scored two more championships in Top Fuel (1996, 2001), becoming the first driver in NHRA history to win championships in both
nitro categories.  But above his championships, Kenny calls his greatest and most memorable achievement becoming the first in history to surpass the 300 mile-per-hour barrier (1992).

Kenny holds the unique distinction of being the first and only race team owner to have collected wins in each of America’s three major motorsports series:  NHRA drag racing, NASCAR, and CART.  He was nominated for the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association Newsmaker of the Half-Century award (2005), voted in the top 10 on NHRA’s 50 Greatest Drivers list (2001) and has been inducted into the Texas Motor Sports Hall of Fame (2006) and the Don Garlits International Drag Racing Hall of Fame (2007).

Kenny stepped out of the cockpit in 2002 and passed his helmet and the keys to the company car to his son Brandon who followed his father’s winning ways writing his own entry in the history book which stands today. Brandon is credited with having the most successful career launch of any other Top Fuel or Funny Car driver in the sport, having won five times in his first 13 starts.

Brandon has 17 career victories to his credit. In his inaugural year behind the wheel of his father’s legendary dragster, Brandon won “Rookie of the Year” honors. In 2007, he pursued the NHRA Top Fuel championship to the semifinals of the season-ending event finishing third in point standings for the second consecutive year, his third career top three finish.

Brandon, a soccer star at Jesuit High School in Dallas, proclaimed his desire to follow in his father’s racing footsteps during his high school years.  Before he was invited to join the race team, Kenny insisted his son get a college degree. In 1996, Brandon graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology.  Shortly after graduation, Brandon joined his father’s team as a crew member beginning with menial tasks, gradually assuming more responsibility.  He is now actively involved in the day-to-day management of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team.

The familiar Budweiser logo has adorned some of the fastest NHRA nitro-breathing race cars for three decades.  Between the two drivers, the Budweiser-sponsored cars have claimed 85 NHRA national event victories, with Kenny scoring 68 of them (29 Funny Car and 39 Top Fuel).  The duo also made history in 2001 at “The Strip” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, becoming the first father-son combo in NHRA history to win the same event – a feat they would duplicate at Chicago later that year.

Kenny’s expertise extends far beyond the driver’s seat.  As the namesake of Kenny Bernstein Racing, he is a merchandiser, salesman and avid brand ambassador.  His combination of professionalism, commitment and competitiveness has made him a motorsports icon.

Early one morning in 1979, Kenny Bernstein arrived in St. Louis to sell Budweiser on sponsorship of his race team, parking his transporter and Funny Car in the Anheuser-Busch employee parking lot.  Thus began the longest running sponsor/team relationship in motorsports history – Budweiser and Kenny Bernstein Racing celebrating 30 years together this season.

“Obviously, we’re very proud to have enjoyed the kind of relationship we’ve had with Budweiser,” said six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein.  “We are deeply indebted to the brand for the unmatched support it has provided over three decades.”

The Bernstein/Budweiser partnership eclipses Richard Petty’s 28-year primary sponsorship by Scientifically Treated Petroleum (STP).

“We are so proud of our unprecedented water mark for the longest consecutive partnership in all of autosports. We owe a debt of gratitude to the members of the media who have followed our story through these past three decades and have given us an abundance of electronic and print exposure. The impact of the publicity in each market has helped us build brand and name recognition in many households across the country which played a major role in the longevity of our program. Thanks for sharing our journey.” – Kenny Bernstein
